View Full Version : Anyone own an Elliptical, Gazelle or Stairclimber?

I'm thinking about buying one. Of course, the one I want (Precor) is over $2000! I can't afford that.
Does anyone have an elliptical or anything else for that matter? I need something that burns a lot of calories (duh!) and wouldn't disturb anyone below me, since I'm on the top floor on my building.
We have them at the gym at school, but I really want my own, so that I can work out more than once a day, cut down commute time, and just hop out of bed when I want and work out.
Thanks guys!

Got a stairclimber, it is great, I bought it from someone. Check your local newspaper or garage sales, I always find great second hand deals on exercise equipment, especially after the holidays (all those people with the failed new year's resolution) Got a gazelle that I also bought from someone it is ok, considering selling it though, not as much of a workout.

I own a Norditrak and don't like it. I wanted a Precor too, but let my husband talk me into getting a Norditrak elip, instead of a treadmill (I wanna kick his arse). I prefer Precor all the way. I don't get the same workout that I get with the Precor - it's not as smooth and just doesn't meet my expectations. I wanna kick dh's butt

Thanks girlie! I figured the gazelle wasn't all that. . .Okay. SO I'm down to an elliptical or a stair climber. From using both at the gym, I know that I SWEAT!

i have a Elliptical its good and quiet...i actually wanted it for XMAS and got it from my parents..they got mine from walmart...its the cheaper one its not as heavy as the ones at the gym..and to be able to add resistance i have to turn a nob to make it add resistance...it has just the normal clock, calorie burner on it...but nothing spectacular really about it...i just actually started back using it...and its easy for me to move it...

This is the one I'm looking at getting. Do you feel that you get a good workout from it? I like to sweat!
Oh, and is it manual?

I have an Elliptical machine. I got it when a Kmart was going out of business for $59.99 original price was $300+++... I waited for weeks until the price was driven so low, that it could not get any lower. The sad part is I hardly use it now. I only use it when I don't feel like driving to the gym or when I have not worked out in months..However, I am glad I have it here, because if at any point I can no longer afford the gym.....there is my back up.

Dont have one but I love the Precor elliptical machine. What I would do is go to your local Sports Authority and check the ones they have. You can test them and I know I tested one that way under 2000 and it was sturdy and smooth when you used it.

Going to Sports Authority is a good idea. I'll do that this weekend.

Thanks thickness. There is no Sports Authority near me, BTW. :(
I'm deciding between the walmart Sportek elliptical and a slightly more expensive Proform ($300-400).

yes its manual but it does have a timer on it with a cal burner...yes i do feel i get a good workout...and the price was inexpensive if you go on the walmart website they have it on there its only like 156.00 or probably with taxes 165.00....

My Uncle has a Gazelle...he's a QVC/ home shopping channelholic! But I tried it and it does create a good sweat in about 10 minutes. In addition, it seems lightweight and it doesn't take up much space. I think it's a good investment

Sky, do you know which model they had under $2k, because most of the used ones I saw were none under $3k.

Somehow, I missed this post earlier.
Webby, do you have the Norditrak ski machine or the elliptical. We had the Norditrak ski machine back in the day, and my sister lost ALL her weight by working out on this machine! It was very loud, though, so mom tossed it.

I have a Gazelle. I guess the good thing is that it is a very low impact. On the other hand, I don't think it gives me a good enough workout. I think both the stairclimber and ellipse trainer would give you a better workout.

I believe we have the same one. I bought mine from almart.com for like 151 w/ tax and it went on sale for like 131 a week later. I believe it's still on sale now. I feel like I get a great workout on it. I'm sweating hard and I never sweat that hard...and it's low impact and quiet and easy to move. It tracks your time and calories and distance and speed. I think for a home workout it's fine. If I want to workout on one of the fancy ones, I'll find a friend with a gym membership and go as his/her guest :lachen:

yeah probably so...i have a gym membership at ballys and dont use it...so i cant wait until it runs out...to save me 35.84....but i basically have the gym at home..and they have some nicer ones at the gym but i get about the same workout...i just position it right in front of my tv and do it while i watch tv...

I got my elliptical from fitnessquest.com
It is pretty good, cost about $399, plus they offer monthly installments....

I just bought the cheaper elliptical from walmart.com.
My reasoning was,
1) I can return it to the nearest walmart if I don't like it
2) the motorized ellipticals start at $700 and I can't afford that right now so I might as well get this one
3) I like the pedal design of it compared to some of the other manual models (some of the manual ellipticals have a back and forth motion as opposed to this one which has a circular motion like the Precor ellipticals)
I'm so excited!
Oh, and thanks to all of you for helping me make a decision!

I want a home elliptical trainer so much!! But I live in an apartment over a restaurant and I know I can't make too much noise. They'd hear the thump-thump-thumping right?

classimami thats great that u made your decision on your purchase of the cheaper elliptical..i know i love it and its not heavy at all...
lookieloo....well im on the second floor at my apartment but it doesnot make any noises...or thumping..the only thing mine makes like a squeeking but that maybe because of a screw being too tight...but no thumping...

LookieLoo,
I'm on the top floor, and for months I've been trying to figure out something to buy so that I could get a GOOD workout at home. I too am concerned about making too much noise.
Then I thought, an elliptical shouldn't disturb the person below me because I'm not pounding the ground like I would be with aerobics or treadmill. I can't wait until I get it.

well thats great i wish i could dedicate myself more time to working out on it..but at least its not like a gym membership or something and have me thinking im wasting my money for having to pay on it...its mine but i just have to put in the time to do it...i think the longest i stayed on it was like 20 minutes...and girl i was about to fall over after i got off lol..but i think its a great workout though...the way i found out about this machine and wanted one was because i had a girl that came in when i was working at sears that had two kids and she was telling me how she use to be bigger and she was happy now that she was smaller and could fit now in junior size clothing...and i asked her how she did it and she told me the epplitical and just watching what she ate...so that got me to wanting one...

For those of you that have ordered an elliptical off of the internet, does UPS bring it up to your door since it is a heavy package? I was looking at one that weighs 93 pounds.
Also, say if the do leave it at the door, I should be able to get that in the house right?
Belle Du Jour

Chivara,
I haven't gotten mine yet, but UPS doesn't usually leave things at my door without your permission. So I'm thinking that you would have to be home for them to leave it, and they'd have to drop it off at your door or maybe take it inside. But I'm just speculating. . .

I would love to have an elliptical at home. I have a treadmill and refuse to get on it. I use the elliptical at work and stay on it for 45 min easy. Sears has some as low as $300-1,200

I think you have would have to sign for it unless you leave one of their delivery attempts on the door with the signature or instructions on it to leave it at the door or at the next door neighbors...but im sure they will have some kind of dolly to be able to get it to you...i now want to get a treadmill and put it in my room...but a small one though because i want to maybe put it on the other side of my bed or in the living room.... i was thinking about getting either one of these from sears Weslo Treadmill, Weslo Cadence C22 $199.99 or Weslo Treadmill $284.99, but im not for sure right now...does anyone have one of these models and know if they are any good???i know that it requires assembly unless i wait until my dad comes down.....

WOW I would have had a fit. I heard the UPS truck coming and I opened my door before he even got out of the truck and held my door open while he wheeled it in...I guess he felt he had to bring it all the way in since I was standing there with the door open :lachen:

I am so excited! I just bought a Stamina 1777 from Play it Again Sports. I haven't used it yet b/c I need someone to help me get it out of the car. The people at the store gave it the highest rating out of all the ones they had, even some of the more expensive ones. I tried it in the store and it was very sturdy and smooth. I will report on my first workout.

Just an update on the elliptical. I love it!
It gives me a good workout. I'm sweating withino minutes of using it. I don't think the calories, or miles are accurate, but I don't care about that, so long as I'm putting my time in.
The size was perfect for my place. It's not loud at all. Makes a few squeaks, but something prolly just needs to be tightened. It took me well over an hour to put it together because I could not get put resistence cable to together.
FYI, this would probably be ackward to use if a person was over 5'7".
Overall, I'm happy with my purchase. Thanks for helping me to make a good investment ladies!
