Hey ladies! I know that there are a few of us out there who have been trying to gain weight. I thought that perhaps we could use this thread to share what we have been doing to achieve our goals.

This can be like our little support group....... http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

That's a smoothie in my mug by the way.... http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yeah im definetely a part of this club! I cannot gain weight no matter what, people tell me that I'm crazy for wanting to put on pounds, but I dont care. I consider myself a heavy eater, but nothing is happening. I think i may start going to the gym and working on strength and building a few muscles so i can gain more mass.
At one time i was drinking nutrament everyday with 2 meals and it put on a few lbs, but nothing major. Plus nutrament is expensive $1.80.

At least you're a heavy eater. I defintiely think that you should you start strength training. That's what i Plan on doing. As a matter of fact, I was just about to change it ot something more comfy so that i could attempt to do this workout in the latest Fitness magazine.

Nutrament is expensive..I agree. Every once in a while they have them on sale at Pathmark for $1.50 but that's still expensive.

I think we should try to keep each other privy of any sales that we know of with Nutrament, Ensire, Boost, etcetera.

Believe it or not, I bought SlimFast yesterday. I checked out the ingredients and it didn't seem that different from Boost or Ensure. It even has more protein. I thought I could use it as an additional meal since SlimFast seems to be on sale more often than any of the abovementioned.

I bought the French Vanilla and its just okay.......I don't know but it was on sale for $5---6 cans. How could I pass up the opportunity to try that?

Me too. I could use a little extra weight. I came across an eleven year old girl who was my height (bad enough) and she weighed more than me, and she was actually a few pounds underweight! How embarassing! My sister was a stick until she met a man who cooked for her. He was a meat man. I am not a vegetarian but I don't eat a lot of meat. Is anyone here a vegetarian?

I was trying to gain some weight a few years ago, I was about 115lbs at 5ft2inchs. Always had been, then me and a friend of mine went to this doctor that usually sold pills to help people lose. He gave us an sricbe for some Periactin and he gave use a B-12 shot and some vitamins. He also suggesed that we drink Ensure Plus between even meal. i gained 15 lbs in about 2months. Now I'm at 135lbs and my weigh still moves around but I haven't got back to what I used to weigh. Just hope that it goes where you want it to http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I had to work on my abs, and still working at them http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

I've heard of Periactin. What does the B-12 do for you? I know my mom used to try to make me take this syrup called Apetivit and from what I remember--it was full of B-Vitamins--not sure which ones though.

Yeah but Ensure is SOOOO expensive...but I'll get right on it--as soon as I can afford it.

SO are you happy now?

I used to want to weigh 120 pounds (like I did in HS). I'm 5'4. But I look at my mom who USED to look like me and wonder if I should just let nature take its course. Maybe I can just bulk up so I won't look so skinny......I don't know.

Daviine,

Girl, I remember you telling me you wanted to improve your nutrition, but I had no idea that you were also a member of this club. It's very agonizing, isn't it? Ergo, pain in the butt, girl!

My loss was due to the food poisoning and bad bout of flu I had. Remember that madness? Geeeeeee...but it has been a real struggle consciously shoveling in more meals. I eat all the time anyway, but eating for weight is like more choices and trying to find combos. It's been a very slow process.

I just ordered the Gary Null Meal Replacement. I read about it a while ago and have recommended it to others. Now, I am hoping that this will push me ahead. What happened with me was that I gained a few pounds...was very encouraged, then I lost half and am back to the weight before the loss. I would like to get to 130lbs, preferably 132 if that is possible. I am at 124-125 now and I am 5'10".

I wish that you and I could support each other with the weight training. A girl online started me on crunches for ab definition (my tummy was flat as a pancake and I wanted that really cool Janet Jackson look) and I do plenty of aerobic exercises, but the weight bearing exercises would be great. I have dumbbells, but that's it.

WIth the B-12, it is supposed to increase your appetite just like the other members of the B-complex family. I think for it to be really effective (the B-12 in particular) you need the shots from a doctor. I take B-12 during my PMS time and it's great for that but have not noticed any surge in appetite.

Much Love and Happy Easter,

Jade

P.S. Girrrrrrrl, what is up with your ends?

I'm happy w/ my current weight. As for the B-12 shot I was soooo greedy after getting it. I mean eating every 2-3hrs. Stopping getting hamburgers, ice cream, chips, whatever, I was closes too http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/lick.gif. That had to stop I was spending alot of money doing that. Grocery bill went through the roof, and it's just me at home. I keep all the snacks http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. I know this isn't good but I'm greedy. But, I have slowed my roll since I've gained the weigh I wanted. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

DJD-----that's so good to hear! I have that here but I haven't really been drinking it. When I was pregnant, my sister used to make me some awesome smoothies/shakes with that stuff. I have the powder in French Vanilla. What flavor do you have?

I want to see a nutritionist but I am leery of pulling names out of directories. I think it would be very difficult to find a rec for a nutritionist (I don;t know many people who advertise that they're seeing a nutritionist ofr any reason)so I am probably going to hold off on that for a while.

Glad to see you here!!!!

I'm trying to drink a Boost everymorning. BOOST is EXPENSIVE, though. IMO it tates better than Ensure and any other meal supplement drink I've tasted! http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/lick.gif

Ms. Kenesha---I fell ya on that. taste is important otherwise you won't stick to the plan!!! And doesn't it seem like Boost NEVER goes on sale!!!

My mom once offered to pay for my Boost/Ensure if I sent her the receipts! I may have to take her up on her offer because I'm broke! But at first I didn't think it was very funny that she wanted the receipts first!!!! Hmmmph!

Hey Jade http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/kiss.gif

Yes--I am in much need of some weight and nutrition. And I know I sound like a broken record but I truly am beginning to feel that my diet is the source of my hair woes. Just imagine the toll its taking on my body. I think one of my problems is that I am not disciplined enough.

Yes I do remember the bout of food poisining. I am glad that you're okay now and I am sorry that it was such a setback in terms of yuor weight. I totally understand where you are coming from when you refer to the struggle to consciously get in those meals.

have you tasted the Gary Null Replacement yet? It sounds expensive. I'm going to have to see if I can my mommy to help me with this one. She'll be so thrilled. She really feels that my life is in danger. She used to call me every day to ask what I had eaten and sometimes I would have to lie to get her off of my back. I'm pretty certain that if I had a chef, I'd eat a lot more. Oh the things I would ask him/her to make!! http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/lick.gif Okay but back to reality.

I wear a size 0 and it is very difficult to find clothes, so this is also an incentive. If I could get to at least a 2, I guess I would be happy but I'm not sure how that would translate into actual pounds.

Of course, even if I could magically put on the weight today I wouldn't becasue I don't have any money for the new wardrobe I would require.....hmmmm...but I guess as long I was using magic..I could make myself rich too!!!! http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have realized that in order for me to do the weight training, I need to join the gym. I do not have enough discipline or knowledge to do free weights. I think I am going to join the gym in my school before I graduate. It's only 1 month and a half but at least it will get me started. Then maybe I will be more dedicated.

I wish there was a video tape for us. A tape marketed for underweight people trying to tone up. Not sure if that makes sense but I just feel like we are so misunderstood and underrepresented.

I'm scared to do aerobic exercise although I'm sure my hair would flourish with all the extra circulation. I listen to my music and I try not to get aerobic but its hard----I hope to learn some strength training moves that I can do whie I listen to music so I won't feel so deprived.

Well, my son says its his turn to use the computer so TTFN...ta ta for now....

Hmm come to think of it I used to eat the above foods A LOT in HS and i was always 140lbs at 5'8... i was perfect IMO... maybe i should learn to cook (dont ask http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif) and prepare a good ole carribean dinner for myself a few times a week.

Now i'm almost 5'9 and 129lbs http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/ohwell.gif.. I was 120 not too long ago so i am gaining slowly but surely. I hope to be 135lbs in the summer and i'll stop trying to put on the pounds.

BTW Boost and nutrament are the best! Boost vanilla is better though, I'm thinking if i drink 1 boost daily, eat rice, beans and plantains 4x's weekly.. I'll be there but the late may/mid june!

Ms. jadu---you are SOOO right. I just don't have the time to cook rice and beans --at least not the way I've been taught.

The plaintains--I can do--especially sweet plantains. I'm on my way to the supermarket....Maybe I'll pick up a few plantains to eat for breakfast--or right before bed. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I mean the rice and beans doesn't really take THAT long but sometimes it just seems so long and complicated since I don;t make it as often as I used to. Since I'm on vacation, maybe I'll make it this week!

Thanks for the tip!

BTW--does anyone know what plantains are good for nutrient wise?

From reading this post topic, it made me reminiscience of my "underweight days". well i have to tell you this, love and adore your naturally thin body as long as you can. for the longest time throughout my 20's, I never weighed over 1281bs. My height is 5ft 81/2 inches. People picked at me, called me Whitney Houston, and I had low self-esteem. I used to drink those protein shakes and pile my plate with food with hopes of being " a thick sistah". Now I am 30 years old and I have a postpartum pouch belly and weigh 140 lbs. Not that I look too bad, but now I yearn for my slimmer body. I now look at old pictures of myself and my body and see that I was actually looked nice in my clothes.
Ladies in a nutshell, these are the typcial live events things which will typically make you gain weight.
1. age- the older you get the more your metabolism slows down.
2. marriage- when you start cooking and eating more at home versus running the streets and going out you will pack on some pounds.
3. babies- your body will never be the same again, especially if you have had a c-section.

I hope that this may be enlightening. Trust me, I was where you'll are now. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The problem with me is, I WAS 140lbs and lost 18 lbs... so this body weight is not normal for me.
I see what you're saying though.. i may be one of those people later on in life that carries a pic of me "when i was skinny" in my wallet.. I know some people who do that and its very annoying

How has your struggle been so far? Have you made any progress?

I am no longer extremely unhappy about my weight. I'm only unhappy about it. I get extremely unhappy when I want to wear a short skirt or when I can't find something in my size--which is practically everytime I shop--which I why I don't shop.

Daviine, how tall are you? Have you thought about asking your Dr. to presrcibe the periactin? You have to be atleast 20lbs underweight according to what's the suggested weight( I think it's called the IBM)it's a guide they go by that tells you what your body weight should be according to your height I might be wrong, but it won't hurt to ask.
The Dr. I went to gave me a scribe for 60pills. I had about 15 or so left once I put on the first 15lbs. They make you sleepy though, that's the only bad thing about them. But, they really work http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Plus, it beats spending all that money on other stuff.

Ngaa, it's not a forced feeling, you just are greedy as hell once you start taking them http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. I know that's how it was for me http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. I started taking them in the spring time, I was at Baskin Robins 31 Flavors about everyday for a 3 scoop sundae http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/lick.gif. It's like you stay full for about 2-3hrs then it's was time to put in more http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I guess the added sleepy feeling only helped add the pounds, because when I was at home I always fell asleep after I ate http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Info on Periactin

GENERIC NAME: Cyproheptadine hydrochloride

Why is this drug prescribed?
Periactin is an antihistamine given to help relieve cold- and allergy-related symptoms such as hay fever, nasal inflammation, stuffy nose, red and inflamed eyes, hives, and swelling. Periactin may also be given after epinephrine to help treat anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction. Some doctors prescribe Periactin to treat cluster headache and to stimulate appetite in underweight people.
Most important fact about this drug
Like other antihistamines, Periactin may make you feel sleepy and sluggish. However, some people, particularly children, may have the opposite reaction and become excited.

How should you take this medication?
Take Periactin exactly as prescribed by your doctor.--If you miss a dose...Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.--Storage instructions...Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container.

Recommended dosage
ADULTS The usual initial dose is 4 milligrams (1 tablet) 3 times daily. Dosage may range from 4 to 20 milligrams a day, but most people will take between 12 and 16 milligrams. Some may need as much as 32 milligrams a day. If you are over 65, the doctor will probably keep the dosage relatively low.CHILDREN Ages 2 to 6 YearsThe usual dose is 2 milligrams (one-half tablet) 2 or 3 times a day; your doctor may adjust the dose if necessary. A child this age should not take more than 12 milligrams a day.Ages 7 to 14 YearsThe usual dose is 4 milligrams (1 tablet) 2 or 3 times a day; your doctor may adjust the dose if needed. A child this age should not take more than 16 milligrams a day.

Have any of you tried eating at night a couple of hours before bed time? I've been doing this steadily for a couple of months now and have noticed that I'm starting to gain weight. My dress size has gone from a size 3 to 5, and it's normally been very difficult for me to gain weight all my life. I've heard that our metabolism slows down when we're sleeping, so we're not able to burn as much calories we would normally burn during the day. Has anyone else had this experience?

If you go to GNC they have a weight gainer gold that has worked for me. There's an 1800 calorie one and a 2200 calorie one (per 3 scoops). I have the largest 2200 calorie one and I take 2 scoops daily with whole milk. It is $35 dollars (not cheap) for one big jug that lasts me about a month but I've had 5 lbs of weight gain in one month and in another month or two, if I consistently stick with it I can reach my goal. However, in the past, consistency has been my problem. I'm so determined now though! I'm about 4'11" and 103 lbs now, shooting to be at about 110-115.

Hey I used to have this problem, now I would say I am happy with my weight (5'9", about 150lbs, don't weight myself much).

I think age played a part for me (I'm 27) and I hear your metabolism slows down as you approach 30. I used to eat a LOT but didn't see much weight gain, If I got sick, I'd lose pounds rapidly. People could never understand why I'd want to put on weight but then say something like "you need to eat a sandwich" http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I had minor surgery last year that required me to sit myself down for 6 weeks and I noticed some gain there. I'm not advocating no exercise, but concentrate on weight training rather than cardiovascular exercise. I've been going to the gym and not lost weight (yay!) because I told the instructor that weight loss was NOt my goal (in my experience many assumed this is the case for members and so don't tailor regimens to suit).

Good luck!

I am also trying to gain weight/muscle. I regularly eat healthy but now I just eat more...I love to cook my own stuff so I make sure it comes out healthy and tasty.

I go to the gym 2-4x a week and I drink a protein shake after each workout. I was complimented by a few of the fellows at the gym over the weekend that I looked like I was gaining weight....I was soo happy!!! I am not trying to gain weight too rapidly and I don't want fat. I want solid muscle definition.

I am 5'7 and right now I am about 123lbs. I really want to build my skinny legs if anything so I focus on my diet and lifting weights.
I do cardio to get the heart going and lose the fat around the midsection.

It's funny, because I am pretty skinny by accepted standards but I have this stupid lard around my belly....I think I am one of those women who hold fat around the midsection. I tried everything and it didn't move. When I tried to lose the fat, I lost weight everywhere ELSE instead http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Has anyone tried the Herbalife Formula 1 shake to have after every meal. For people that wanna lose it they drink it instead of a meal, but if you want to gain it you take it after each meal. Ebay is probably your best bet you can get 1 500g can for a few dollars which will last you a few weeks. I use 2 heaped tablespoons per 275ml glass of milk. They come in 4 flavours. I haven't been very consistent, but I have got a bigger belly over the past few weeks, I guess that will slide down to my butt and thigs (as usual) but I'll keep you posted on how it works out. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

PERIACTIN is the BOMB!!!!!!!!!!!! I have taken this pill in the past for weight gain and believe me it works. I was 100 pounds and wearing a size 0. It was not cute. I mean the only side effect I had was that it makes you sleepy. I was like baking cakes every other day. I'm from the "DIRTY SOUTH" where men like the women just like all the rappers rap about with big booties that are BOOTILISCIOUS. This is no joke. So once I started to take periactin I would eat sooooooooooo much until it wasn't funny. But, I also drank ENSURE PLUS because it has 360 calories. MY fav is the butter pecan. You don't have buy the ensure every grocery have their own brand and it's still 360 calories because the ensure is kinda expensive. But, let me tell you I achieved so much weigh gain with this pill that i know i could appear in a BOOTILISCOUS video and give Beyonce a run for her money because my body is bangin' now. I am so happy someone out feels just like i used to feel I thought i was the only one in thwe world who actually wanted to gain weight. You might have to watch your abs because after awhile you will see weight start to pick up in the this area.

I gained 7 pounds in a week with periactin and 15 by the end of a month. I have since maintained the weight and will be going back on it soon to put on 15 more pounds. This time will take me longer though because I am going to the gym twice a week. I went from 28-23-31.5 to 31-26-35

DJD, congrats on the increase. I know you feel good!!! Question, how are you dealing with the side effect of making you so sleepy? I want to do this again but my schedule is very hectic so I just have to plan the right routine. I assume take it at night but will my appetite be the same the next day? How do you do it?

also, where did you orders yours from? It's been a couple years since I last bought some...

I answered your PM, but I did take it 3 times a day 20 - 30 minutes before I ate. Now, I'm going to start taking it just before dinner.

Yay! I know we can! And I have been holding on to the last 4 lbs for a year! I gain those lbs from drinking the hardgainers shake recommended to me by my pharmacist. I think I gonna start back using it! It's expensive though! :ohwell:

I took Periactin a year ago for about 2months (w/ breaks in between). I went from 5'5 110 to 135 and after I stopped using it, I stablized at around 130. I absolutely loved it. It made me eat like crazy!!! Now, over a year later, I'm losing the weight. And I plan to start up on Periactin again (...after midterms next week). The weight went to all the right places, I have a more youthful appearance in my face, I have all kinds of people commenting on how much better i look, and most of all ......"I feel beautiful". As a result, I started to become more self confident.....my whole attitude changed. It's a whole new world out there when you love how you look. Oh,the extreme sleepiness eases up a lil after a full week of continuous use.

Good luck ladies with whatever methods of gaining you use :)

B vitamins, B complex in particular is essential for weight gain-it makes you hungrier and gives you energy.

if you want to gain weight all you need to do is sleep right after you eat. i've been doing this for awhile and last time i went to the doctor she said i gained 20 lbs in a year. i can't say that the weight will go where you want it to but most of the weight went to my stomach.

First of all I would like to say hello to all, I am new to this forum and I have learned so much from you guys... thank you.... Okay down to business, I just had to reply to this thread. I know exactly how it feels to want to gain weight. I know exactly what to do to gain weight. I went from 115lbs to 125lbs in four weeks by taking periactin 3 times a day, eating three meals, and drinking three protein shakes ( Gnc Weight Gainer 1850 Dutch Chocolate). My hair got so long from drinking those protein shakes from November 2004 to the beginning of January that people thought I had got my hair sewed in, they asked me did I have a baby or something , what did i take etc... I mix my protein shakes with warm water instead of milk, It just tastes better that way. I told one of my best friends about periactin and she went to the doctor and got some. Me and her had sort of a competition to see who can gain the most weight, she won because she ended up getting to 135 before I did. Make sure you exercise because the weight that you gain might not go in the right places.

Hello ladies. Is there an online pharmacy where I can purchase Periactin without a prescription or is there anyone who's already reached their weight gain goal willing to sell their leftovers to me?

Thanks.

You guys should try weightlifting. That will definitely increase your weight and sculpt your body especially if you incorporate a lot of protein in your diet. Here's a link to a weightlifting website: www.bodybuilding.com
