Ok i got a deal on a package of 5 microdermabrasion sessions usually $750 for $250. The only thing is that the spa is in the mall Nuvo is the name. Does anyone think that the idea of getting micro in the mall is bad. Does anyone think the price is too good to be true? Has anyone had any runins with Nuvo?
They said i need to get one session done every two weeks but i think that may be too often. I think i may get the 1st 2 every two weeks then do 1 a month for the next three months. I get a facial b4 each microD session also. What do you think?

Dont Go To A Spa To Get Micro D, Go To A Dermatologist. The Mall Micro D Is Not As Effective As The Derm. I Have Been To Both, And The Derm Is Maybe 40 To 50 Dollars More, But You See Better Results. The Derm Machine Is More Effective. USUSALLY A SESSION(6-8) SESSIONS COSTS BETWEEN 500 -600 USD. YOU CAN GET EVERY WEEK, I DID AND MY SKIN LOOKS REMARKABLY BETTER.

If you go to the spa, make sure you find out if they have experience doing black skin and ask for pictures!!!!!!!

Pamela Edwards, fashion and beauty writer for Essence magazine, noted that black women err on the side of caution when it comes to skin care.
"Black women are very conscious of hyperpigmentation since their skin scars so easily," Ms. Edwards said. "To prevent scaring, one thing women can do is combat acne, but that is not always the cause. The sun also makes hyperpigmentation worse. Most of the time, black people don't get the sun protection that they need." Ms. Edwards also insisted that dark skin is extremely sensitive and reacts to high levels of alpha hydroxy acids and microdermabrasion with skin scarring and hyperpigmentation.
ok i think i am going to go get a refund thanks ladies

Hey Ms Portugal! I think you're on to something. Alpha hydroxy acids make my skin dry and overtime very dark if I don't moisturise significantly afterwards. That's why I've stayed away from microdermabrasion. I've always thought that the derm wouldnt know how to handle my black skin, especially since it gets dark when it's irritated. :ohwell: Hope everything works out for you but I would rather get a recommendation from someone with my skin properties since this is large investment.
Good luck!

I have my first microderm appointment with the esthetician at my derm's office this Friday. I hold a similar stance on skin care as I do on hair care services: Before going in for the more complex/critical services (chemical/cut/color) or (microderm/peel) etc, I will try you out for something simple and less critical (wash and set) or in this case (facial). It's all in the handling. If they don't handle well for a simpler treatment, if the service is off or they do not respond well to your questions or special requests, there is no way I'm letting you near me for things that may go badly and leave me devastated.
That said, beware of skin services in dayspas and worst yet, malls. You really don't know what you're going to get. You can always grow more hair, but the skin on your face, that's a little more complicated. That's priceless -- would definitely pay a little more if I was more sure of a better outcome thru experience or referral. I HTH. Please do tell us what you decide to do.

well i did it. i went and i was scared as heck. it was a nice experience to have someone cleanse my face for me. then she did clairifying pads on my face. it was to remove excess oil on my face. CAN WE SAY SANDPAPER!!!! this is where i was ready to leave them pads were full of 2 different acids and it really was abraisive. my face was on fire. i told her it burned and she said it was normal and fanned my face. it felt better but when she stopped the fire was back on. so she fanned more. then she did the micro D it felt like a vaccuum and lite sandpaper at the same time. not as bad as the cleansing pads. then she cleansed my face again and then applied a serum after that my skin felt a bit tight and it looked shiny. it felt great. it was super smooth my face looks like stacy dash LOL
why did the esthetician pull my card. "oooh your skin sucked up the product YOU DONT DRINK MUCH WATER DO YOU???" uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh well i am getting really serious about that now. dont want her pulling my card next time.
i felt better when i saw her she was from the middle east and had some color as well as suffering from adult acne. she gave me lots of tips on controlling it which i knew washing 2x per day not sleeping in makeup etc but she said to use skin renewing products with glycolic, and another acid and Retin a she said the more the skin peels the lighter dark spots get and acne should be easier to control. i didnt take a b4 but i will take an after and post it. like a said not much diff except i'm smooth and shiny

Ms.P -- I am glad that your appointment went smoothly. Being a little anxious about my own appt this week, I am worried that the products will be "strong" on my skin as well. The tight, shiny look is one effect of the micro-d. I have been told.
Two other things: my esthetician made the same comment to me one day during a facial -- that my skin sucking up the product (mask, etc) indicates that I need to consume more water. Also, I'm curious to know about the skin being lightened helping keep acne at bay. I am now beginning to look alot better from a bad flare-up of adult acne, and i've found that avoiding and improving dark marks and patches for an even tone helps to improve the "look" of the skin. As for the acne itself, if anyone can share their experience with this, please do tell and which products specifically. TIA :)

i think she meant exposure to sun makes the acne spots darker and that makes them harder to fight
ps i woke up with my face feeling tight and dry i kept using moisturizer yesterday and i think i will continue this trend today as well as kicking the water intake up to 8glasses from the 4 i had yesterday
my next treatment is next monday then i will space the next two out

Today my skin was peeling so i looked and found this, i should have looked all of this up b4 getting my treatments:
Do not use Retinoid products, Glycolic, or any other Alpha Hydroxy acids (except for those in your facial cleanser) for 48 hours before & after treatment unless directed by your doctor or other medical personnel. This includes moisturizers which contain any acid ingredients (except stearic acid is OK).
Cleanse your skin and moisturize as directed by your doctor, nurse, or other medical personnel. Your skin could feel very tight for a few days unless you moisturize it. We suggest using an AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid) cleanser twice daily, every day.
Always use a sun block providing protection from both Ultraviolet A and Ultr-violet B wavelengths, and one that has an SPF rating of 15 or greater every day. For 7 days after any microdermabrasion treatment, it is very easy to get sunburned.
No intense or prolonged exposure to sunlight, or use of a tanning bed, for at least 72 hours.
If you have a propensity to frequently develop cold sores and your doctor has prescribed medication for treating this condition, use this medication on a continual basis throughout your series of MicroD treatments.
You may experience these symtoms following your treatment
REDNESS AND SWELLING – After standard facial peels, most people return to normal skin tone within 30-40 minutes. Deeper treatment for shallow scars, or moderate to heavy sun damaged skin, may appear slightly red or swollen for 3 to 48 hours. Patients who have very sensitive skin may appear this way for up to 4 days, although this very rarely occurs.
SKIN TIGHTNESS – Your skin will feel tight and will tingle as if exposed to the sun or wind for approximately 12 to 48 hours following a treatment session. Even though you will have normal skin tone, your skin will be slightly inflamed for 2 days, which is the reason for the tightness (a fortunate by-product of this tightness may be the temporary disappearance of your fine lines/wrinkles).
SKIN PEELING – Less than half of the MicroD patients experience some moderate skin peeling 48-96 hours after a treatment.
SUNBURN – You can sunburn very easily for the next 7 days, so be very careful!

I get regular facials w/glycolic peels or microdermabrasion every 4-6 weeks at a Spa in NYC. I did my research and felt comfortable going there. It helps that Naomi Campbell and Gisele go there also.
My skin has never looked this good in my life. My skin was really bad after my baby and I went to the derm. He gave me Differen Gel but I knew what I really needed (pore cleaning). I got a facial w/extractions AND micorderm all at once. It was pricey but the best decision I have made. People now compliment me on my skin all the time. :D
I am using DCL products for my face and they are great, I no longer have a shiney face :yay: ...you just don't know how much of a miracle that is.
I am going back to the facialist of Monday 2/28 and I will we will decide if I will get the facial w/peel or microder w/peel.

i got my second treatment today. she said they have new glycolic pads that are stronger than their last brand and maybe thats why i am peeling. she said her skin can take alot and she usually doesnt peel but now she as well as others who dont usually peel are peeling.
this time it burned alot less when she used the sandpaper I mean pads LOL my skin hasn't broken out around the time of my monthly like it usually does and the texture looks a bit improved. If i can get my water intake on point i think i may see the total picture a lil better. I have 3 sessions left on my package. so far so good besides the burning sensation that goes away within 10min and the peeling.
lkg4healthyhair have you seen these ladies during a visit? I would be busting out the digi cam i am the LHCF paparazzi LOL
