lol... it's not that serious.... well, almost.
I just started running and have gone twice now. It's really cool, Atlanta winters are not bad at all and that run just makes you even warmer. I run 1.2 miles (measured w/my car's odometer, 0.6 mi to my neiborhood's intersection).
Anyway, my thighs really hurt from running! I'm climbing steps like an old lady and I'm wondering when my legs will finally get used to the impact and stop hurting so much after the run. Help, please, running gurus?

i'm assuming you're suffering from DOMS - Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. it should start to fade in 2-3 days. usually the most severe pain is felt 1-2 days after you exercise. DOMS is normal especially when people dont exercise for a while and then pick it back up again and when they dont take preventative measures. make sure you warm up and then stretch before running hard core for 1 miles and then cool down and stretch after running. the more you exercise, your body will become accustomed to it.
HTH...in the mean time get some ice and try massaging your thighs and dont do any vigorous exercise that involves your legs until the soreness subsides :)

Ah. Cool. Sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing :)
I definitely did not do any stretching, but the second time I slowed to a walk every 0.1 mi or so to drink some water. lol... when the water finished, I had to just walk the rest of the way home. 21 minutes was how long it took me :)

Also drink plenty of water! My guy friends that lift weights claim drinking water helps to prevent muscle burn. Don't know if it's true or not, but it can't hurt!

Yes the water will difinenty help. Good luck on your runing, I'm traing to run the Peachtree this July, an I am not a runner, now I will life weights any day, but running, well it's going good so far, but I just really started, I'll keep you informed. Ya keep me in your prayers, that I will finish my goal and if you're in the ATL on the 4th of July come out and see me.

OMG that'll be so much fun!!! :) My Pastor usually runs in it (then tells us his story about how he went to get donuts afterwards ;) ). I wonder if I'll be in ATL at that time, though. I might get a job out of state and then the whole Atlanta fun will all be over :( Come out and see us at our next area meeting, ya hear?
Oh... update, my situation got worse today. Not only did I go running rather than take the break, I sprained / twisted / whatever'd my anke today as I was trying to clear the path for another runner that was coming in the opposite direction. The little bastard didn't even stop to see if I was okay even though I went, "OW!!! OH GOD!!" after twisting it. I think it's just sore. I actually made it back just fine but now it hurts even more. Owell................

Make sure that you are stretching properly also.
