Do you ladies suffer with Excema? I have a little one that has a bad case of Excema. I have to be so careful with the clothing I buy and bath products. It is to the point that he just takes baths in warm water without soap anymore becuase he skin flares up so bad.

I have excema and had it really bad when I was little. Mine was aggravated by food allergies. Have you had your son tested? I also had to be careful with things like soaps and detergents. I remember the only soap I was allowed to use was Basis. Also my dermatoligist said no baths, only showers because soaking in the water aggravated the dry skin. What medications is he on now? They have much better treatments today than they did when I was little.

I second the food allergy comment. Dairy protein is a common one. Have you tried pure shea butter on his skin to moisturize?

Now this is gonna sound odd, very odd - but I hear Crisco (Vegetable Shortening) is very good for soothing eczema. Some people have had success with that Elidel medication but I am scared of it - because it suppresses and alters your immune system and makes you more suceptible to ailments. I had a skin problem once that my doc gave me a tube for - that big 'old tube is going to waste - I didn't touch that stuff.

The Crisco thing is an old home remedy. But its horrible to be a kid, slathered down, in your jammies and have them sticking to you...
There are WAY better alternatives!

Hey! LOL I use Crisco everyday during the summer! I mix it with scented oil and apply it over my golden shimmer body lotion - it makes my legs really shiny and golden like Bey's. The trick is to not put too much on.

I've never used the Udder cream - but I've heard that its really great stuff. There's some other heavy "farmer" moisturizer products on the market too... I just can't recall the name off the top though.

Ok this is interesting. Found this site with some info:
http://www.keepkidshealthy.com/welcome/treatmentguides/eczema.html
And in the article it says the non-bath thing is out of date. Which makes sense sicne the derm who told me that did so MANY years ago!
I wonder do they recommend putting oils or anything in the bath water to help with moisturizing??

My dermatologist recommended a bath oil called Aveen. She said it would help moisturize my son's skin. She also said he needs to two teaspoonsfuls of Zrytec a day. She also prescirbed a mixture of steriles and cortisone to help with the healing. She also prescribed some cream called provac to use every other day. She also said to grease him up well by using thermaseal, eucerin cream or vaseline. He is allergic to metal, grass, tree and dust pollen.
Thanks for the articles. I will read them later on since it is so late in the night.

Sbaker is it Aveen or Aveeno? I've used Aveeno products before and they're really good. They have (or had?? not sure..) an oatmeal bath powder thats really good for soothing irritated skin.
Zyrtec is the BEST allergy med. I have a prescription for it but mostly for my hayfever type allergies. Nothing knocks them down like Zyrtec and best of all it doesn't make me sleepy.
The steriod creams are standard for eczema. I have a really potent one called Ultravate. But I'm not sure if they prescribe it for children because I have to be careful when I'm using it so it might be too much for kids.
What kind of metal is he allergic to? All metals? Or is it a nickle allergy? My sis is allergic to nickle - so she can't wear most jewelry. Even her glasses will make her break out a tiny bit where they come in contact with her skin.
No food allergies huh? Well that's great because lemme tell you it SUCKS to be a kid allergic to various types of food. I was allergic to ALL of the good stuff - chocolate and every good fruit known to man. Plus eggs. The food allergies wore off around my early teens.

You may want to use unscented/fragrance free soaps (like Dove body wash or oil of olay) and also unscented lotions. To wash his clothes Arm and Hammer has a perfume and dye free product that you can use.

Lag- it's actually Aveen bath oil which is mostly sold in the doctor's office. We have been using Aveeno products since he can't use soap.
I went to allergist for him to be testing and he isn't allergic to food. He seems to be allergic to nickle metal. I would agree with you on the Zrytec. It seems to really help get the excema undercontrol.

My husband had it. Chemo therapy actually killed the fungus(?) that caused it (dont reccomend that treatment of course)...but we used olive oil after each shower. He had it on his chest and back. The olive oil had some real healing properties and he did not have the scabbing, flaking, scarring that he used to have. He said it was a real relief too.

Per Dr. Weil( I always love the natural approach) I increased my evening primrose oil and I am keeping the area REALLY moisturized.
That udder cream is fanastic. A small patch of excema on my arm is gone and I just bought this cream yesterday!!!!

Try oatmeal baths. Increase your child's zinc supplements to about 30-50 mg daily. Supplement your child's diet with brewer's yeast or put 2 teaspoons of blackstrap molasses in a glass of milk.

I suffer eczema on my ears and bottom of feet. Keeping these areas moisturized help. Here are some prescriptions that I tried in the past that have helped me as well:
Elidel Cream
Ultravate Cream/Ointment
Fluocinonide Ointment
My nephew has eczema and my sister bought Aveeno Oatmeal Bath and uses Eucerin or Aquaphor healing ointment on him. They helped eliminate his eczema immediately.
