For every six pieces of empty MAC containers you return to the mac store (regardless of product)you get a FREE lipstick!! I never knew this. I've been throwing away my empty containers all this time and missing out on the goodies.
Hopefully this news will help someone.

And not only that but they will exchange lipsticks used or unused - no matter how long ago! I'm not much a lipstick wearer but bought two odd colors about 2 years ago. I visited the makeup counters in Nordstrom and the lady talked me into sampling some colors that she thought looked nice on me. They did and I told her about the other colors I bought 2 years back. She said, "Bring them back and we'll exchange them with these two." I said, "But I used them and don't have a receipt". She said, "It doesn't matter, we'll give you two others if you'd like." I went home and got them and came right back.
I don't know if this is for all of there makeup but I know it counts for the lipsticks.

Just as an FYI - this doesn't work at all locations nor is it really their policy as a company. They are generally ok with most returns with receipts within a certain period of time (30 days for most).

I was told I only needed 3 mac containers I did not know it was six.
I think it must depend on location and who is working at the time.

I thought it was the cardboard containers they come in at first, so I was lookin stupid when I handed the girl those and she looked at me like I was nuts! I now know it is the hard containers that the makeup is atually in, lol!

lol@ honey Jammz. That's some serious wishful thinking.
...I live in CT and my friend told me that it takes 6 containers. I imagine it's different for each region of the country.

Here is the info from the MAC site:
Back to M·A·C Program
As a part of a pro-environment commitment to recycle/reuse waste, M·A·C recycles its primary packaging through the Back to M·A·C Program. M·A·C encourages our customers to return primary packaging of many M·A·C products to M·A·C counters. This packaging is then forwarded to appropriate recycling centers. By returning six (6) M·A·C primary packaging containers to a M·A·C counter, you will receive a free M·A·C Lipstick of your choice [except for the Viva Glams]. This is how we thank you for helping the environment through recycling.
Most primary packaging of M·A·C products is accepted as Back to M·A·C "currency." M·A·C does not accept the following as a part of the program:
Secondary packaging of any sort [paper box, plastic/cellophane wrapper, shopping bags, etc.]
Samples [sample containers, special/trial size products for promotional/seasonal kits]
Cosmetic applicators/tools [disposables, puffs, sponges, scissors, spatulas, swabs, sharpeners, tweezers, curlers]
Accessories [bags, belts, make-up cases, lashes, Blot Film]
In addition to our "Back to M·A·C Program," M·A·C uses minimal packaging and recycled paper to paperboard packaging in our offices, manufacturing and distribution facilities. Vegetable-based inks are used for printing whenever possible. At M·A·C we share your concerns about the environment and we are continually looking for ways to address those concerns while providing our customers with complete product satisfaction and safety.
