Treating Suede

I have some really nice suede boots, but I am scared to treat them. I don't want them to discolor from the spray and my dad said even if I treat them, if they get wet they'll mess up. I love suede and I'm seeing so many cute pairs of shoes & boots, how can I protect them from the snow and rain???

I've been using some protectant by Totes for my boots and coat for the past couple of years and I haven't had a problem. I've treated tan, brown and black.
