Sunblock NOT Sunscreen

Does anyone here actually use "Sunblock" not sunscreen.

^^ Sunscreen acts as a filter allowing some UV rays to be absorbed into the skin and absorbing some so it doesn't get to your skin. Sunblock acts more like a wall (a physical block) between your skin and the sun reflecting and scattering UV rays. Sunscreens "...are classified as drugs by the FDA because they are "...intended to protect the structure and function of the human integument against actinic damage." Sunscreens are considered more cosmetically refined due to their pleasing consistency and are, therefore, typically used over a prolonged time for effective photoprotection." Sunblocks (physical) "are opaque formulations which absorb, reflect and scatter up to 99% of both UV and visible light. Because they are messy and may stain clothing, sunblocks are often used on such sun-sensitive areas as the nose, lips, ears and shoulders. (Some sunscreens now have UVA protections by having titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide as an added ingredient.) Sunscreens need to be applied about 30 minutes before going out in the sun coz they need to be absorbed into the skin to provide protection, while because sunblock is a physical cover, you can apply it just before going out; no advance prep needed. Sunscreens tend to blend well like a lotion on your skin while sunblocks tend to give a whitish hue since they are thick and opaque.

I use sunblock inconsistently. I was told by the dermatologist that the reason for my black spots on my face (hyperpigmentation) is because of my lack of using sunblock.

Did your derm say anything about sunscreen or strictly sunblock. I figured sunblock would help more so because of what it does (per Nonie's post)

wow I didn't know that there was a difference. I've used the terms interchangeably. Now I have to look at the products that I have.

its nice, i got it at walmart for like $7 after i saw it recommended in ebony, women's health and shape magazine

Is it a sunblock? I remember picking it up but it didn't have zinc oxide/titanium dioxide so I'm not sure if it's a sunblock or sunscreen.

that's what I use and it broke me out like crazy. it look a minute before I realized what it was that caused it. now I have to work on the dark marks :ohwell:

I was going to ask you about the xterra. Currently I use Shiseido ultimate sun protection lotion and it leaves a faint whitish cast even when I rub it in really well.

I have Shiseido too and got it after a lot of raves from the sales lady at Nordstrom's but I also hated the white cast. That's why I don't use it. It also felt...erm...is sticky the right word? Xterra doesn't feel like that, which is why it's replaced everything else I used.

I don't wear makeup but if I did, I'd give it a shot. The only makeup I've worn has been mineral powder and it was fine with this on.

That's my same question about the Neutrogena, it says sunblock but the ingredients are for sunscreen :perplexed

I use sunblock. DDF or Peter Thomas Roth for my body, and Mary Kay for my face. :yep:
