View Full Version : Ladies Do You Dress Feminine

I asked this question because I noticed a lot of black women tend to dress "unfeminine" meaning I don't see them in women shoes often or dresses and skirts. I notice they wear jeans a lot and men sneakers. I was getting on the bus the other day and there was a young black lady wearing denim sky blue jeans with a nice fitted stretch yellow top. Her hair was in braids and she wore beautiful yellow costume earrings. Her make-up could have been better. I noticed her shoes were men patent leather (yellow and white in color) air force one Nikes. I walked over to her and told her that she would have looked much better if she wore women shoes, but I did compliment her and told her that she still looked lovely. I noticed black women are least likely to wear skirts, blouses, dresses, female shoes and make-up. Why is that? I think we should become more feminine and show off our gift as women because it will help a lot with confidence and the way people see you.

I'm actually kind of surprised you actually walked up to someone stating that "they'd look better if...." I would of taken offense only because it's unsolicited advice, but I see you were only trying to help. To answer your question, I think your thinking of what is feminine is a little different from mine because I do believe a woman can wear pants suits, slack, jeans and sneakers and still look as beautiful as ever. I don't like skirts, I very rarely wear heels (I'm 6 ft tall), but I find that when I wear my sweatpants, wife beater and a pair of chucks (usually while skateboarding), guys want to talk to me more. Could be because I look more approachable/down to earth. BTW this "trend" isn't just for black women--- I see alot of spanish and whites do it ,too.:drunk:

I think that's an error on my part because I never told her literally, verbatim "she would look better" but I did tell her that she look lovely and a pair of yellow shoes would have "rocked" it. I know there are different types of feminity and ways of dressing but I think I was clear when I stated wearing skirts, dresses, and women shoes as the focus. So I am asking do you see a lot of black women dressing this way or not because my answer is no. I see a lot more women in jeans, t shirt, and men sneakers. I wear sweat suits, jeans, t shirts myself but the sweat suits, jeans, and t shirts I wear are all design for women. I also give compliments to women all the time and I always get a thank you and smile so I'm not doing anything wrong.

Hmmm, I don't think it was neccessary to tell the girl she should dress feminine. You don't know her (lifestyle) well enough to make that type of comment imo.
I don't think black women dress any more/less feminine than any other races.
I will say I always see latina women rocking heels 90% of the time. That's the only generalization I can make. LOL

Hmmmm.... I never told the young lady that she should dress feminine. I'm not a wacko, I would never tell someone that directly or personally. I complimented her and told her she look lovely and said that a pair of yellow shoes would have rocked it. She was pleased and smiled and said thank you. Thanks for being honest about the shoes (heels) and this is what I'm asking. I, too, see a lot more latina and asian women in heels or women shoes more than I see black women wearing them. I asked this question because a few years ago a male friend of mines asked me why I never wear skirts? My father and brother told me the same thing that it is good for a women to dress "feminine." I think it worked for me after I got that advice from the men in my family.

Like I said before this is across the board with every type of woman. Most of the black women I see wear heels, with nice skirts. I think there are many factors included like Lifestyle, availability of shoes (my neighbor hood sells mostly sneakers!), CHOICE of style etc, etc. Latinas are more likely to wear heels (I think it has to do with the fact that most of the ones Ive seen are shorter) and Black women and white women in my area do wear shoes but low heel to flats which are equally as nice. Ive seen some sistas runway walking!! Where do you live OP? I live in NY, and I see sistas in heels 24/7....

About feminine dress: Yes, I have noticed that fewer black women wear dresses and skirts relative to women of other races.
About telling someone she would look better if xyz: Girl you are too bold. :lachen: Lots of people don't like when a stranger comes up and shares an unsolicted opinion about what they have on or don't have on. I fear that if you do it to the wrong person, the outcome could be unpleasant for all parties. :look:

Oh okay, well if that works for you thats good. As for me, I'm a skateboarder and my life in general is mellow and laid back so I wear jeans and a tshirt... I find alot of guys appreciate the relaxed look just as much as the "showy" looks.

Thanks for giving your opinion or fact and that is what I was asking. You see most black women in heels and skirts and I don't. What I noticed I don't see across the boards. I do think there are differences amongst groups. I live in the midwest.

It seems like you told her to dress more feminine in a round about way ...."she would have looked much better if she wore women shoes."
But regardless I can't really say black women don't dress feminine. I work in a professional atmosphere and I would say young women of all races and older black women dress the most "feminine". Older (40 and up) whites, asians and hispanic women don't really put in as much effort to me.
If anything I would say compared to other cultures, Americans as a whole dress more casually. Oprah did a good show on this not too long ago.
Eta: I live in Texas so I see Hispanic women wearing heels/wedges with anything. At least the ladies I see.

Thanks for your opinion. A pair of women's jeans and a women's T-shirt is perfectly fine even with a pair of women sneakers. I don't come across any black women who are skateboarders. I noticed the white skateboarders tend to be grudgy. I do watch the X-games and skate board championships on television.

um.... ok. I guess I was confused by your having said you DID tell she would look better, MUCH better at that, if she wore women's shoes.:confused::confused:
Anyhoo. It seems like you have a great interest in fashion and you were just thinking out loud about how she could have made a nice outfit even nicer.
But in my experience, one must be very careful to avoid giving offense, even if you meant well there are many women who would catch an attitude at having comments made about thier wardrobe.
OK, bye.

I actually said a "pair of Yellow shoes." The girl said thank you with a bright smile. I'm assuming she didn't take offense to it. I'm not asking about the work place. What do you see in your daily life outside of the work place. I actually see more asians and latina women in heels or just women shoes more often than black women even when they wear jeans.

When I wrote the posts I was speaking out loud and metaphorically. When I told her that a pair of yellow shoes would of rocked it... I basically was telling her that she would have looked better if she would have worn a pair of 'womanly' shoes. My post was to the readers and not me speaking directly to the lady as it happened. I never ever once got bad feedback or a negative reaction from voicing opinion on someone style of dress with a compliment. I'm into fashion and I draw and illustrate women clothes. When I was a teenager I went to the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC.

In daily life, I really can't say we are the least feminine.
If I had to pick the most feminine dressing I would say young asian girls, they usually have on cute blouses/dresses/skirts with jackets/blazers and if not heels feminine/cute flats. That's all I got. LOL

To be honest I think alot of times, people just smile at you but they are thinking something totally different. I know I do it when my mom tries to tell me how to dress, and she thinks I should wear more feminine clothes, I just smile and say, "I'll put that in my suggestion box and review it later." but in my head I'm thinking "STFU and mind your own business." Also it could be the area. In NY that type of thing probably wouldn't fly much these days. Personally, even though guys appreciate femininity, I think men are more intrigued by women who step out of the box of what is stereotypically feminine as well.

Where I live I see women of all races that should take more pride in their appearance. A lot of young black and hispanic women love tennis shoes in bright colors. Its so hot here that most women are walking around in sandles and flip flops. Too hot for closed toe shoes.
I wear skirts and dresses maybe 40% of the time when going out. The older I get the more I like to dress up.
