Sorry I just can't give up white rice. I grew up on it. We eat white rice in my home just about every day for dinner with various sauces and stews and such :lick:. I, however, do not eat as much of it anymore since trying to eat healthy and trying to lose weight. I now eat about 1/2 a cup of white rice to at most 3/4 of a cup of rice with my dinner about 5 times a week on average. Somedays when I am feeling guilty, I may just eat about 5 to 8 tablespoon fulls and be done with it.

The serving info one the brand we eat says 3/4 cups is about 150 calories, 35g of carbs and 3g of protein.

My question is, do you think this is ok and I can still lose weight without totally giving up white rice? I hope so because I just can't do it :nono:
Anyone else still eat some sort of white rice while losing weight or maintaining their weight?

The thing about the white rice is that the process of making it white removes all the nutrients and fiber from it. OS actually, what you ae consumin is just like the garbage. You can eat rice tho, but ir have to be tha natural full and not processed rice (arroz integral) and you can find em in any natourist store.

its hard for me too. i love rice and could eat it everyday; i've been eating brown rice for almost 2 years and its just not cuttin it. i don't like those shell like things, and its just not the same as white rice. thankfully i've cut back on eating rice so often, so i may phase brown rice out and stick with the real thing.

Did you read what she wrote? How can you tell someone who grew up eating white rice daily that stopping is "no big deal" :nono:.

OP, not all white rice are processed. There are unprocessed white basmanti and white jasmine rice. Try those, they are delicious.

White basmati rice tastes really good. I can't have it until later in my journey but its my favorite rice.

There should be a support thread for rice eaters...I am a ADDICT. i dont think i can give it up. i eat ALOT of white jasmine rice...with every meal :ohwell: There are so many mixed reviews on whether its good or bad that i just say the hell with it and work out offset the carb intake. I eat rice, i go workout, it seems to be working. Make sure you are having daily bowel movements as rice can cause constipation. take a fiber supplement if u see symptoms :yep:

And it is a big deal.

Thanks OP. I have the same issue with white potatoes. I don't eat them everyday, but I enjoy them and there really is no great substitute.

I eat rice every day, but at most a 1/2 cup cooked. In my experience you can lose weight and still eat rice. I've lost 10 lbs over the past 2 months, but I never stopped eating rice. I went from 140 to 130 lbs, and i'm 5'8", if that helps.
As long as you burn more calories than you intake. Also make sure when you eat rice you're having protein with it. I try to take in more protein with each meal than carbs.

I also don't tend to eat it for dinner. and dinner is never after 8pm.

but you know, everyone is different.

I eat rice nearly every day too. I switched over to brown rice and I like it. It would be too hard not to eat it because most of the dishes I make or eat NEED it. LOL. I mean you can't have red beans, gumbo, etoufee, jambalaya, boudin, chicken without the rice, now can you?

I didn't read all the responses, but these rices came to mind as a replacement for the regular white rice. My family loves white rice and I will use either the Jasmine or Basmati--no complaints.

I grew up eating white rice. Tons of white rice. I finally let that garbage go when I found out that regular white rice doesn't have all of the fun, yummy nutrients that other rice has (Brown, Basmati, jasmine). I feel like my body is important, diabetes runs in my family, and I need to put the best things in my body. Doesn't your body deserve the same?

Most people don't even know how to cook Brown, Basmati, jasmine and that's why they think it's nasty.

Brown rice: one part rice to 1.7 parts water. (too many people add too much water so it comes out mushy).

White Basmati Rice: One part rice to 1.5 parts water. This is the best rice for your money because it's longer than regular rice. Also comes in brown rice.

White Jasmine Rice: One part rice to 1.0-1.2 parts water. Jasmine Rice has a lot of water in it before cooking, so you don't need a lot of water. If you are using a rice cooker, add equal parts of rice and water. Also comes in brown rice.

Give it a try, OP.

Yeah, you can lose whilst eating white rice. I used to live with 4 Asian girls (Chinese and Korean) and they used to eat a small portion of white rice on a daily basis. They were all thin and I doubt they've ever been overweight a day in their lives. Therefore, white rice did not make them fat. They also ate a lot of vegetables, lean protein and nori rolls. They didn't eat junk much.

My point really is that so long as your portions are in check, you will lose. It is out of control portions of anything that will blow you up. With that said, I believe that white rice is totally devoid of nutrients, causes bloating, drowsiness and is thus a waste of calories. On the very rare occasion though, I do have a small portion (of basmati, since that's what my family cooks). If I were in your shoes, I would limit it to twice a week and make sure the rest of my diet is on-point. Personally, I eat brown basmati rice and cook it in chicken stock with other spices.

To make a healthy diet a permanent fixture in your life you must be able to stick with the changes you make for life. If eating white rice a few times a week makes it easier, then so be it. I think most of us have a not-so-good food that we don't want to banish. Just be aware of how that food affects your body.

LOTS of Japanese people eat white rice every day. The older people won't touch brown rice because it reminds them of World War II and hunger and famine.

You can add things to white rice to make it healther, depending on which type you use. With Basmati, Indian herbs are good, like tumeric and cumin seeds (edited to add cumin). With japanese rice, you can make your own furikake (search justhungry.com) or add green tea and make ochazuke.

I love white rice too.

I eat white rice several times a week. I'm still losing weight. I've never followed the low carb diet. I just count calories.

Well, I don't have that issue with rice. I only eat the stuff maybe 5 times a year-maybe. BUUUUUTTTT, white potatoes!!! OMG- I am not giving them up. I agree with everyone else who says it's about portion control. I have been able to lose 40 lbs w/o cutting out any type of food. At the end of the day, it's about burning more calories than you consume.
