I've always been a big eater. I'm able to put down my plate at most dinners out (even though I tell them to give me half and doggie bag the rest, I usually polish both halves off at one sitting) and then have the gall to look around to see if anyone else needs help. I'm bad. It's a wonder I'm not more over weight but I attribute that to the fact that I don't eat fast food but once in a great while (no fries in months) and I excercise at least 4x a week including weight training.
But my main problem is when I try to eat more fruits and veggies for snacks to stave off my out of control appetite, I only feel hungry again with in an hour until I eat something with either meat or bread. It's like I've worn a groove between the sofa, my bedroom, and the fridge.
How do you all manage. Has anyone successfully changed their hunger meter? If so how?
By the way, I've tired drinking water before meals.

I think you should look to protein to cure your hunger. Iirc, they are harder to digest and therefore keep you fuller than carbs. Imo, fruits are not the best thing to eat in order to cure hunger. Personally, I think that you could find a vegetable with more fibre, fewer cals and less sugar than many common fruits. I actually think fruits are somewhat over-rated when it comes to eating them as a snack. Of course, not every veggie is equal, I don't snack on carrots but will snack on some broccoli with 1/2 tbsp olive oil or a salad with a boiled egg.
With that said, I'm not a big fan of snacking. If I'm having an issue with staying fuller, I look to what my main meals consist of first in order to change how I eat instead continually reaching for a snack. Processed foods, lack of protein, high sugar and low fibre will leave me hungry very soon after my main meal. I find the most filling meals consist mainly of fibrous veggies (like broccoli or a side-salad), some healthy fat and protein (such as a chicken stir fry). I eat wholegrain carbs instead of white but do not consume much of them.

I do the same thing. I am notorious for sitting in front of the TV and all of a sudden being "hungry", not because I really am but because I eat in front of the TV so much that if I snack I turn it on and vice versa. I have stopped myself a few times to say "hey, you're not hungry" but I will still grab something. I am really shocked I am not heavier, but it is catching up with me -- I have gained around 10 lbs this summer alone from being sedentary in my apartment. The other day, my friend and I split a large Domino's Brooklyn-style pizza and I inhaled 2 slices and picked up the 3rd before I even really realized I was eating anything! That was it for me; I started the BFC challenge Monday determined to stop all this mindless eating.
Granted, I am only 2 days in, but the urges I had to snack yesterday DISAPPEARED today. I am pretty sure keeping track of everything that went into my mouth had something to do with it -- when I reached for the cheese nips I had to first look at the label to see how much sugar was in it, and reading all these labels has made me super aware of what exactly I am reaching for. In addition, I ate a lot more protein today, and I will use that to back up what tocktick said about protein filling you up. The only time I can't think about snacking is when I am noticeably full, and after the big protein-filled breakfast I had this morning and the large wrap I had with a whole chicken breast cut up in it, eating something else was the LAST thing I wanted to do. I think between reading the labels and writing down everything I eat, I may have found a viable solution to the mindless eating.

Well I have read that you haev to reprogram your brain. Just think when you are use to eating all the time it is a mind thing. When you are really hungry your stomach will definitely let you know. This will be hard but try to set certain times for you to eat because when you eat all the time, it becomes a habit. Try to eat breakfast, snack, lunch, snack and dinner at the same time everyday to see how that works. Once you get use to that eating schedule that you make for yourself, you should be okay. Be sure to eat a lot of protein which helps to fill you up. Even if you eat two boiled eggs and a piece of fruit as a snack that will hold you over until dinner. There was a time when I was so use to eating something sweet after lunch that at a certain time everyday I would have to have something sweet. Sort of like classic conditioning in a way. Even after I had eaten dinner I would have to have something after eventhough I was not hungry. That was a really bad habit that I had to break and am happy that I broke that horrible habit. Good luck my dear :0).

I eat mini-meals all throughout the day. Try this and try to really balance your diet using the food pyramid. Maybe you should go see a dietician or maybe you might even have a tapeworm? Not to scare you but it is a thought.
