View Full Version : I really want to do this (fruit & veggie fast)

I have several motivations for doing this:
*spiritual
*health and cleansing
*weight loss
I read about doing a 21 day fruit and veggie fast in The Diva Principle by Michelle McKinney Hammond. (good book too)
She states that it should be mainly raw fruits and veggies. I love fruit, but I'm not too big on raw veggies. I will also allow myself to have orange juice. I am having difficulty imagining myself sticking to it for 21 days.
Any tips? Would anyone like to try this with me?

I've done something similar to this, except it included brown rice, which is yummi.
If you can't stomach raw veggies, you can try steaming them a little. Steamed broccoli and carrots tastes really good, with a side of diced tomotoes.

That does sound good BB. I don't have a steamer, but I usually "steam" vegetables by making a foil packet with alittle water in the bottom and putting the veggies in that in the oven for a bit. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Enjoy the toliet it will be your best friend http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I had to do a fruit and veggie fast when I was 14 because of my intestinal probs. You can steam veggies in your microwave too. If you have a fairly new one. We use the steam feature when we make veggies at home http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I aslo had to include wild rice for energy source because the first couple of days I felt really tired.

If you've never done a 7-day semi fast, I would strongly recommend against attempting to do this for 21 days.
That said, I think your selection of fruits and/or veggies will be important if you plan to stick to it for 21 days. Make sure you settle on your faves, and that you include some of the higher water content ones - when the going gets tough, these will help.
Also, start each day with plenty of water.
Good luck.

I appreciate that advice. I was thinking after I posted this that 21 days might be too heavy to begin with and that maybe I should try a smaller number of days at first. Thanks.

the last time i tried a fruit fast i was starving all day....i was better off fasting with no food at all...i felt much better...fruits make my blood sugar spike and then plummet and i end up STARVING!
good luck girl, and dont forget your water!!! i would start with just a 7 day commitment and then see how you feel....21 seems a lot!

Here's a resource you might find helpful or maybe interesting. I have his book and this is the detox diet I use periodically:
http://www.elsonhaas.com/
http://www.elsonhaas.com/articles/article_01.html
The Detox Diet
Special Guidelines for The Detox Diet:
Chew your food very well and take enough time when you eat.
Relax a few minutes before and after your meal.
Eat in a comfortable sitting position.
Eat primarily steamed fresh vegetables and some fresh greens.
Drink only herbal teas after dinner.
The Detox Menu Diet Plan:
Morning (upon arising): Two glasses of water (filtered, spring, or reverse osmosis), one glass with half a lemon squeezed into it.
Breakfast: One piece of fresh fruit (at room temp), such as apple, pear, banana, grapes, or citrus. Chew well, mixing each bite with saliva.
15-30 minutes later: One bowl of cooked whole grains – specifically millet, brown rice, amaranth, quinoa, raw buckwheat, or buckwheat. Flavoring can be two tablespoons of fruit juice for a sweeter breakfast taste, or use the "better butter" mixture mentioned below with a little salt or tamari for a deeper flavor.
Lunch: (Noon-1 P.M.) One-two medium bowls of steamed vegetables; use a variety, including roots, stems, and greens – e.g. potatoes or yams, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, beets, asparagus, kale, chard, and cabbage. Chew Well!
Dinner: (5-6 P.M.) Same as Lunch
Seasoning: Butter/canola oil mixture. Make this "better butter" by mixing a half cup of cold-pressed canola oil (or olive or flaxseed oils) into a soft (room temperature) half-pound of butter; then place in dish and refrigerate. Use about one teaspoon per meal or a maximum of 3 teaspoons daily.
11 A.M. & 3 P.M. One-two cups veggie water, saved from steamed vegetables. Add a little sea salt or kelp and drink slowly, mixing each mouthful with saliva.
Evening: Herbal teas only – e.g. peppermint, chamomile, pau d'arco, or blends.
Note: You may feel a little weak or have a few symptoms the first couple of days; this will pass. Clarity and feeling good should appear by day 3 or 4, if not before. If during this diet, you start to feel weak or hungry, assess your water intake and elimination; if needed, you can eat a small portion of protein food (3-4 ounces) in the mid-afternoon. This could be fish; free-range, organic chicken; or some beans, such as lentils, garbanzos, mung, or black beans.

If you want to try a shorter one (like 7 days) then I will be down to try it with you!

You could also juice your veggies. Fasting on veggie juice leaves you feeling full and not wanting at all http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/nono.gif.

How does that sound for you guys who'd like to try it also?

I usually just have brown rice or quinoa. I tried millet and I didn't like it. I love the brownrice because my energy seems to last all day when I eat it or when doing a "Detox Diet" to fast/cleanse. I've been using a lot of flax lately, but I'm not really sure if it's considered a grain. I just know ot tastes really good!
Goodluck with your fast!
