i am really trying to tone my body and i was thinking of taking ballet classes. i thought it would be fun and also motivating. sometimes just doing ab work at home is so unmotivating and i really don't want to join a gym. thanks for any tips, tiff.

Definitely look online. Where I live I found two dancing groups that do classes that were not even in the yellow pages.

I would check at some local collages if I were you. Also, if there are any professional dance companies in the area, some of them have "community classes" or adult classes. Be careful going to local studios, because "some" not all aren't very good at teaching proper technique, and only care about making money. Also, if you see lots of trophies everywhere in the studio, it usually means these places use up class time for rehearsing and you sometimes don't get a proper class.

Furthermore, before handing over money for a class, I would ask to watch the class first. Then make your decision afterwards. Some places have something like a "10 Class Card", which allows you more flexibility. Also, if you end up not liking the place, you've only payed for 10 classes and not an entire year!

Ok here's the listing...not sure how up to date it is...but it may help you get started finding places. I agree with BB too - check with local ballet cos...

Rotaru International Ballet School

Alpharetta (Atlanta area)

Here's the scoop: "This school is serious about dance, and the instructors treat adults, regardless of level, as dancers. I highly recommend Monica Hoekstra's classes. Her patience and enthusiasm make her students feel comfortable. Kay Whiffen's classes are also good, but tough. I'd recommend them for the more advanced adult student."

The other thing to do is try:

criticaldance.com and balletalert.com

They have several adult beginners on both sites, from all over the country. One may have a good referal in your area http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
