I've always heard black was a no no when it comes to brows because it's so harsh and looks fake. Ok, I get that but but what do I look like putting brown on my brows when my hair is black? To me it looks off and very fake. I've done brown and I've done black....both can look fake if done wrong but I've never been able to get brown to look right. I always do black now.

So what do you use or suggest? Maybe I was using the wrong type of browns before, I don't know but if you guys have any pics of your brows of either color please post.

I use a dark brown NYX brow pencil. Black is always too dark on me and regular brown just looks fake. Dark brown blends perfectly for me.

I use black eyeshadow. It's all about the blending. I tried brown and that looked fake. Recently, I received a sample of Anastacia's brow powder in brunette (which is a really dark brown) and it is the only thing outside of black eyeshadow that works.

I use the dk brown e/s from the Loreal HIP duo "FOXY". It's a very dk brown and it looks natural. I am dark skinned but black looks fake and vampire-ish and llike I had two black catepillars on my face. I never thought to use brown but for me this way better

I used brown when I was relaxed, but I've switched to black now that I'm natural. I don't know what it is about my kinky texture, but suddenly the dark brown I've been using for years looks uber fake. As long as you've mastered the application and blending, you should be fine. I know people have their hangups about black brows but if it was good enough for Aaliyah it's good enough for me.

I don't think black brows is a bad thing. Any color has the potential to look fake when applied incorrectly. I say use whatever color best compliments your hair and skintone. If that color is black then so be it.

My brows actually shine BLUE-black in sunlight. My hair is naturally jet black.

I look odd with anything but blue-black or jet black brows.

People compliment how glossy and thick they are. I've heard black makes hair look thicker, when its dyed black to hide damage. Maybe it has that effect with brows...or maybe they're just dense, I'm no brow-guru.

Natural arches help too -I DO think black brows must have a defined shape as they are so striking. No room for error.

I think it works for any woman of color with black/very dark brown hair, IMO, whatever your complexion.

i use NYX's charcoal, which actually is dark brown looking. or i use prescriptive's groom stick for brows in cocoa. prescriptive's groom stick in cocoa is a perfect shade for my brows but it doesn't seem to stay on as long as NYX's

ETA-- i've used black before and it worked out fine. i agree with what another poster said about it being a lot about blending

I actually prefer to fill in my brows with black eyeshadow or cake liner because I like the way it looks with the shape of my face, eyes and brows. I also think that shading my brows with black works better with my complexion.

Full disclosure: I was once talked into lightening my very prominent eyebrows with bleach for my wedding and HATED it! It did not suit me at all. :nono: For the record, my eyebrows are similar in shape and length across the face, to Kim Kardashian's AFTER she has had makeup applied. I thank God I grew into those bad boys! I know that some makeup artists like Sam Fine are big proponents of lightening brows by different means but it didn't work for me because I didn't feel it enhanced or complemented my features.

Take heed, Ladies! Before your wedding or any other momentous occasion that will be marked with photographs, DO NOT do anything that will greatly alter the physically unique and/or quirky things about yourself that you have learned to appreciate or actually love.

I do a dark brown, so smashbox brunette brow tech or MAC showstopper. Never black.

I use Milani Easy Brow in dark brown or Embark. I also have another brow pencil (I forgot the brand) in black. It doesn't really matter to me which, I think it comes down to application as to whether it looks fake or not because my brows are dark and thick anyway.

When I have time; I use eyeshadow.. I think it comes off a little softer.. but I never have time..lol...
I usually use Rimmel Pencil in Dk Brown.. or MAC Stud.. sometimes stud is a little too dark.. I don't want to look like the "Count" from Sesame Street.. lol. Thank God.. mine are mostly full all over .. I see youtubes of people who have none..and wonder how that looks in person when they give themselves a 2cm arch from 4 scraggly hairs..lol.

I agree! I applied the black color lightly so it didn't look fake. My SIL was the one who told me not to use black. I've since started using brown and prefer this color now. Black looks fake when my eyebrows are growing out, which i normally do so that I can try a different eyebrow shape.

I use a medium brown. Even though my individual brow hairs are black, they are not big-dark-crayon-mark thick, so it's a different effect. Big black marks are very noticable, in a bad way.

A lighter color allows you to not be makeup-artist-perfect and still look right.

Aaliyah was 19 years old or something. They can wear overdone makeup and still be pretty (in a still picture). No airbrushing in real life :giggle:

I use MAC brow pencil in Spiked. I like it. I'm currently growing my eyebrows in then I want to dye them like a shade lighter. I want to warm my skin tone (a la Queen Latifah). But, I want to try Benefit's BrowZing. I've heard good things about it.

But if the black works forr u, work it out then!
