I have taken this supplement for years! It also helps with regulating blood sugar levels.

No, I think Prettyfaceanb simply wanted to add more info. about ALA, given all the attention it's received in this forum. :yep:

BUMP...

i'm curious about this too. someone in DI's ALA thread, i think kamilah, recently mentioned she had some hair loss after taking ALA. when i did some cursory research, i did read mention of warnings that taking ALA if you have mercury toxicity can cause hair loss, and that mercury toxicity could occur as a result of having metal fillings

anyone know if this has any truth behind it or anyone with any information re: hair loss and ALA?

TIA, ladies

do they even make mercury fillings anymore in the US?

i thought they switched to "silver" fillings.

eta. i see the "silver" amalgam fillings are actually 50% mercury and 50% other metals :nono:

mercury is a known toxin. the FDA admits it may not be safe but doesn't recommend having them removed. hmmmmm

i don't know about this but i've heard it can cause anemia which could lead to hair loss

thanks for responding. any clue why? chemically, i mean...

Silver fillings have mercury in them.

yes, you're right. they do.

hmm... i used to take iron for my anemia. and fillings have mercury :scratchch
... i wonder if/how a possible hair loss side effect of taking ALA is due to the supplement's chelation effects on metals/minerals? i am pulling at straws here. can't really find any conclusive evidence online. if anyone has any insight, i'd appreciate it!

Lipoic acid is also a super-chelator, capable of removing form our bodies excess iron (http://www.diagnose-me.com/treat/T76343.html#G623), calcium (http://www.diagnose-me.com/treat/T76343.html#G539), copper (http://www.diagnose-me.com/treat/T76343.html#G563), toxic molecules such as cadmium, lead and mercury, as well as organic hydrocarbons.

The lipoic acid binds to the iron, removing it from the bloodstream. I can't find much else on it, but obviously there must not be any genes telling it to stop taking the iron from the bloiod...if you already have too little iron, its not going to help with anemia.

I don't see how having fillings would stop you from taking ALA since it says it removes excess mercury, which would be good if your filling started to break down and leak into your body.... It's interesting that they still even PUT mercury in fillings:nono:....Well....I haven't had one since I was 10 though. IDK how recent the other fillings you all have are....

thanks, kinkicurly. what you're saying makes sense.

i've been doing more research on this and most articles do seem to agree with what you're saying... that ALA is helpful in removing excess mercury if you have fillings, eat (a lot of) certain types of fish, etc., and not harmful. maybe the harmful side effects that i read about in re: ALA and mercury toxicity via fillings are the detoxifying symptoms that people are experiencing
