LENT

The old Teutonic word "lent" meant simply the spring season. Since Anglo-Saxon times, though, it's been used to denote the 40-day period of fasting and purification leading up to Easter. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (February 25, 2009) and ends on Easter Sunday (April 12, 2009). Really Saturday is the last day.

Giving up something for Lent is primarily a Catholic custom, but even if you're not a devotee of any formal religion, the voluntary surrender of a cherished substance or pastime can have powerful spiritual and psychological benefits. If nothing else, it will show you what you can do when you put your mind to it.

Since certain type of foods are cherished to me- I put this in this thread. Does anyone want to join?

I have done this once before years ago. I wasn't trying to lose weight at the time but I did. I will give up caffeine, chocolate and fried foods. I think it will be a great start but it will also provide some clarity for me.

Any Takers?

I want to do this. The only thing I can think of now is TV. That would really hurt me . I think it may be too much.

I might give up elevators :perplexed. Let's see. I need ideas. I might just give up fast food; however you define that:look:

I will be doing this. I've done the giving up food thing and it doesn't phase me much. This year I will read the bible everyday during lent. I've done this before and it was tough. If I miss a day, I add a week to it...

I would define fast food to be anything that has a drive thru. The elevator one is good.

Great, I understand being completely off course. I feel the same way.

Reading the Bible is also what I will be doing, I just didn't put it here. I am looking for a little clarity and purpose. So, I think elimating the toxic foods that I depend on such as chocolate and caffeine will also help me.

My church is practicing Lent and basically advocating a vegan diet until Easter. I want to do this, but I am going on cruise in a few weeks and have been looking forward to eating guilt free for a few days, wrong I know. I was thinking of doing this, but stopping for the trip.

A sacrifice for me will be to give up sweets, cookies, cakes are my weakness. Non nutrition related, my beloved internet and LHCF. My time spent here needs to be severely limited.

I hadn't thought about what I would be giving up for Lent, but I know that it ain't this. I can't live without LHCF! I'm thinking about fried foods instead, or adding something I need (like discpline) to my regimen instead of taking away anything.

Checking in Ladies. Tomorrow is the day... I have refined my lent goals. I thought about it and I decided that while I want to lose weight. I also would like to achieve more clarity and purpose in my life.

So, I am still giving up Sodas, because I use it as a crutch and I am pretty sure I am addicted. It affects my sleep, my skin, my energy, and things I am probably not even aware of.

The second thing is that I am going to take a 20 minute walk everyday. Now, this walk will be in addition or a part of my normal workout. However, It will be outside as long as it is not raining and it will be without music, the telephone or anything. I am not one much for journalling. However, when I walk it clears my mind and I just get to be with my thoughts.

Oh and for good measure. No fried food.

I sort of tweaked mine. I'm giving up processed foods plus the white:)

Man, All week I've been stuffing my face. Eating all the junk favorites. All the heavy meals. I've been going to town. Today for lunch I think I will have some Chipotle and for dinner pizza and a fish sandwich with fries from McDs or Wendys. LOL. This is too much fun:)

I was talking about this on my blog here. I OD'd so much because I really think Lent will allow me to permanently give up some of those things. This is the same way I gave up meat over 6 years ago. I constantly gave it up for Lent and one year it just stuck. Hopefully this year will be my last year eating processed foods and hopefully I will be able to cut back heavily on white flour.

I can't wait to see the results from this Lent. OH, and I also plan on reading more for Lent.

Good luck ladies!!!!
