MILWAUKEE -- Due to a class-action lawsuit, some of the top name brand cosmetics that required top dollar won’t, at least for a little while.
Starting next Tuesday at select stores nationwide -- including Macy's and the Boston Store -- Chanel, L'Oreal, Clinique, Lancome and other labels will be free.
"They're full-sized products. It can vary from a mascara to a body lotion," Boston Store cosmetics regional manager Julie Dunn said. "We are scheduled to have this up and offered through Jan. 27, however, the supplies will be as they last -- one per customer as supplies last."
Customers can choose one product from about 10 different brands. The products include makeup, lotions and perfumes.
The lawsuit accused several cosmetics makers and department stores of price-fixing.
A group of consumers sued and the two sides settled on a plan to distribute $175 million worth of free products.
A Web site (http://www.cosmeticssettlement.com/) informing customers about the deal said it applies to shoppers who bought specific products at specific stores between 1994 and 2003.
But retailers will "take people's word for it" and no one will have to prove they qualify to get the deal.
While it's a great deal for customers, it might make for a good deal for retailers, as well.
The retail sector is reeling with what's being called the worst holiday season in 40 years.
The deal gets shoppers in their stores, and managers said they see it as an opportunity.

I won't be there. Just thinking of the lines and chaos gives me a headache. :nono: I see how people are when stuff goes on sale, I can just imagine the lines for free stuff, I pass.

I believe you go into a store and pick 1 item from any of the high-end lines and get that item for free. So, you could go to all the Saks, Nordstroms, etc and get 1 item at each store.

I'm sorry, I didn't get that far into the story to pay attention to specific products so I'm not sure. I only knew about certain brands. I would't be shocked if they're not letting people get super expensive stuff though.

You can only get one of the items from the list that was published. Do not contact the cosmetic companies directly, the retail stores are the ones that offer the free product.

this is almost too good to be true....as my sister-in-law would say, "Is this for real-real or for play-play?"

Seriously, if someone on the board does try this, please report back and tell us how it went

So how do we ask for the free products? " Hi, I am apart of the class action suit and I am looking for my freebies.."?

Ladies, this is real. I heard about it on the radio and looked it up online. I'll post the link, it's from BusinessWeek, and I've read it in a couple of other places as well. Basically there was an accusation in 2003 that "stores tried to limit sales and scale back on the amount of cosmetics in their inventory, thereby keeping both prices and competition high."

The department stores will take people at their word that they bought something during the time frame that is specified. So, what I plan on doing is going to a mall where there is a Dillard's, Macy's, Norstrom, and Bloomingdales so that I can get something from each location. So, I'm just going to go in and say something like, "Hey, I heard that ya'll are giving away products to people who bought cosmetics a few years back. How does that work?"
