Hey Ladies!
I wanted to post a quick message to check-in. I see our group is pretty quiet these days. How's everyone doing? It's hard with the holidays on our hills, but we gotta stick with our committment :)
I just found a few helpful videos at http://www.active.com/video/play.htm?assetid=49f21757-019d-4e66-888b-cc90676fa383.
I'm trying to find a few 5Ks to sign up for in Dec, Jan, and Feb to keep me motivated.
I also recruited my old running crew to get back started after Thanksgiving so that we can have a buddy system going on. I so want to be "into" running.
Last week was tough and I didn't feel like doing anything. This week is starting out better. I have a moderate run yesterday at lunch of only 2.5 miles at a nearby park. Today I may not be able to run if it gets dark before I make it home. I do however plan a moderate run on Wednesday and a long run on Thursday before the turkey dinner and a short run on Friday after ;)

Doing okay here. I have been doing the C25K Program for the last two weeks and I am hoping to finally move to week 2 on Wednesday (I know slow but I have a walk pace of 4.0 and a jog pace of 7.5). I went to the gym yesterday but it was a joke -- I did like .5 miles and that was it!! I am going today and I am hoping to do my running with super sets.

Hey chica! :wavey:
I decided against doing the 5k next weekend. I don't think I can hang with outdoor running. :nono: So I'm trying to learn to love the treadmill. :yep: And please believe that as SOON as the weather breaks, I'm taking my runs outside.
I'd like to find a 5k around April or May.. maybe March if it's not icy in Feb. (I fell really hard on some ice/slush, so I'm weary about getting out there again. Hence my bishazzness. :lachen:)
I'm glad to see you. :) Glad to know you're still running too! I'm still lurking in the background, you can count on me!

Girl!!!! You call 7.5 MPH a jog??? I guess for my short legs that's a full on sprint! LOL! Sounds like you are doing very well!
I'm shooting to start with a couple days of High-intensity interval training (HIIT) after Thanksgiving.

Girl, I feel you about the bishazzness! :lachen:
I started my dedication in the winter the first time and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. But, I had the assistance of running buddies at the time. I'm trying to rally up those troops now.
I gave my sorry treadmill away. It was a cheap one anyway that I could only walk on since the motor sucked! I've requested a treadmill for Christmas, so we might search Craigslist for a good used one. But, I actually enjoy outdoor running better. But I know as far as dedication is concerned, I need a back up plan that is indoors. :look:

A "jog" pace.....? :look: :perplexed Girl that's a "runnin from da po-po" pace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :lachen: Do ya thing, mami! :D
Just got back from a lunchtime jog - 30 mins on a 2.5 incline, alternating speeds from 4.5 to 6.5. Also did a 10 min walk at a 10 incline.
I think I'm getting addicted to hitting the treadmill. Crazy, right??

Having people to jog with you DEFINITELY helps! When me and my bff run together, we both are so competive athletically so we go above and beyond. It's actually fun.
I firmly believe that outdoor running trumps a treadmill every day of the week and twice on Sundays. So good for you for toughing it out! :D I hope you get your treadmill this year!

I hope I get it too... It's all about finances after the wedding and other goals right now. I'm the cheap one. :look: And since running outside is free, I can't justify the treadmill. Luckily, we have a great gym here at work, so I'll have to put that to work... I need to pay my $$ to sign-up for some winter races so that I can stop skipping out on training days.

Oops, I meant to say run. The 4.0 was a jog. I am getting less out of breath every time I do it. I am going to give week 1 one more go and then go to week 2. There was some asian guy next to me running at like 8.5-- I was heated. I just long for the day that I can run 3 miles do strength training and some abs in 1 hour. I will keep chipping away at it. I really need to hit the streets running but I may have to start off in the park or something.

I got it a llittle confused. That is definitely not a jog pace, its a run pace. I believe that pace is like 1mile/8mins. I am really lazy and I hate being in the gym for too long so I gotta maximize my efforts and this is the only way:)

is it 7.5km/h or 7.5mph?
cuz i know 7.5 - 9.0 km/h is like 5.0 to 6.5 mph. :) . i went on a treadmill in a gym and they changed it from kmph to mph and when i put it up to 8, i nearly flew off LOL :(

hello all!
I wasn't part of your original group but I hope I can join. A few weeks ago, I made the decision to run outdoors and found out that I really enjoyed it! Running on the treadmill used to be such a chore for me - I was always stopping to adjust my speed and incline, I got bored, etc - but running outdoors with my ipod has been a lot of fun. I usually just run until I feel tired or like I got in a good workout.
And when I say run, I should say that I don't just run straight...I do a mix of running/jogging/fast walking. I just listen to my body and adjust my speed accordingly.
I usually go out for runs lasting about an hour. My last run, I went out for about 40 minutes. When I came back, I was on google maps and I saw that I had run a little over 3 miles!! What an accomplishment. I'm not sure if that's a respectable time (feels like it to me) or how 3 miles compares to a 5k but it gives me hope!
I do have a question for you ladies though. Lately, my left knee has been hurting after running. It's not throbbing but I notice whenever I walk, it doesn't want to bend -- it just straightens up really quickly. I sorta just hobble around for a few days after running so I can't run as often as I want. I don't think it's the actual knee, I think it's a muscle or something on the backside of the knee. I would see a doctor but I'm unemployed and have no insurance :ohwell:. Has anyone had any knee injuries? Should I be putting ice on this or wearing some sort of brace when I go running?
Anyway, just want to share how much I enjoy running. I'm going to be a bit sad when winter comes and I am forced to run on a treadmill again.

Feel free to join! Welcome! I am not a seasoned runner and have yet to run outside. I am in the process of completing the couch 2 5k program. I have only recently begun expiriencing pain while running but I believe its due to the excess weight on my joints. There a few seasoned runners here so they could probably answer your questions.

Ooooh what is this about? Is it a challenge???
I did a 5k run back in July but i pretty much stopped after that. I went for a run outside 2 days ago and it flt great but now im limping around.
Does anyone actually go running outdoors with snow and ice out there. I don't think i'll be abe to keep it up when we get more snow out here.
Im hoping to get back to a regular routine but i'll have to join the gym to use a treadmill then i plan to run a 10K next year.

Hey Ivy! It's never too late :) We basically are just trying to support each other on our individual goals of becoming runners, joggers, whatever. So, come on and join the Group (it's called LHCF Runners under the GROUPS feature on the forum).
As far as how 3 miles stacks up to a 5K, you're pretty much there. 5K = 3.1 miles :) So if you're running 3 miles, that's practically a 5K.
And with the knee, you may want to invest in some really good running shoes. I haven't exactly taken that advise yet, but I want to go to a running store and have them fit me for shoes that are perfect for me. I've not had many problems with my knees. I try to stretch, warmup and keep good form while running. But I have a friend who wears a brace on her knee while running and she says it helps her.

Hey Anancy! Girl, it's not a challenge... something like a support group. Come on and join the group :)
I run outside... in ice, drizzle, and when it's below freezing. Not much snow in Atlanta, but we get many winter days in the teens and I try to keep my focus...

I would like to officially join this support group. I have been running about 2 miles, 5 days a week. My goal is to do a 5k early next year and lose a little weight. My short term goal is to find somewhere to run outdoors and to increase my speed and distance a little each week.
Also is anyone cutting out or adding anything to their diet to help with their run? and is there a running shoe that someone can recommend?

Yesterday I did the following on the treadmill:
1.5 mile jog @ 5.5, 2.5 incline
.5 walk @ 2.5, 15 incline
It was hard run for a lot of different reasons but I got thru it.
Hi to all the newcomers, welcome to our support group. :)
MissTy - I'm adding more protein to my diet and cutting out as much refined sugar/carbs as I can. I can't really rec. a good running shoe because I actually need to get some new ones, lol. But check out these articles (http://www.runnersworld.com/topic/0,7122,s6-240-319-0-0,00.html) and it should give you a place to start. Everyone has different needs when it comes to running; I know for me, I overpronate so I need a supportive shoe. HTH

Hey MissTy! Do you have a track near you? I did my speed and endurance work on an outdoor track because it's flat. I live in a somewhat hilly area and I couldn't do much before.
As far as shoes, everyone is different. You can go to a running shop and get fitted to see if you have overpronation, supination, or a neutral stance. Go to http://www.runnersworld.ltd.uk/pronation.htm for tips.
I just bought the ASICS Gel-105 and yesterday was my first run in them.

My feet were fine, but I had horrible shin splints! May have been that I didn't stretch enough.
Good luck!

Hey Ladies! My lil running group met up for the first time in a long time yesterday at 4:15pm. We set out on our 4 mile route and it was harder than ever this time! Of course it's been a while since I've done it, but I had horrible shin splints around mile 1.5 and had to walk a bit then got my stride back after a while.
Today is our off day, but I plan to hit the gym at work during lunch and use the eliptical and do some core work so that I can start focusing on overall training.
Welcome to all the new comers and I hope everyone else is having a productive week thus far :)

I absolutely LOVE ASICS sneakers for running! I've been running at the gym onthe treadmill for approx 3weeks only 2x/ week. Right now it varies w/ my times 45-60min; 12min/mile-9min/mile; 2-4miles straight. I will like to include inclines of 2.5-5.0 but my heels begin to hurt so I only run w/ 0 incline. My goal is to run 20miles/ week!! This may sound strange but I feel FREE when I run.
