I found a studio here in Denmark, very very expensive tho
My budget is tight as it is.. Do ya'll think i could get the same results from something like pilates or just regular running? Im not in good shape and i do wanna try, but the price and fitting the time in might not be able to work out :/

Running and Pilates are both excellent forms of exercise...you can and will see excellent results if you change your eating habits and do either activity on a regular basis. I know a few women whose bodies are insane and they all do Pilates.

To my knowledge neither of these activities have the same detoxing qualities that Bikram does, but running is free () and you can do that until you save up enough to start taking Bikram classes.

Does the studio have a website?

I do something called "Moksha Yoga"... I don't know if it's the same thing, but it is in a heated room as well :yep: it can get as hot at 40 degrees (Celsius)... I go twice a week (and I run and do weights on my off days) it's the absolute BEST! I LOVE IT! I'm definitely addicted and I always look forward to my classes. People I haven't seen for long periods of time have been telling me I've slimmed down in the upper body area which is what I LOVE about yoga it's a FULL BODY WORK OUT! I love love LOVE IT!

bikram has its benefits but all the studios no matter where I've been seen like wet, sweaty, mildewy clothes...yuk!!!! A co-worker of mine's father got a staph infection from a studio, keep in mind that studios put down carpet which hold all kinds of funk and bacteria, I wouldn't recommend this type of yoga for long term usage......too limited in the range of motion. Kundlani, and other methods are good too, its all about the teachers ;) I plan on going to a studio up the street from my house as they usually do a one wk unlimited special.

AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my lord, where do I start?

It was not what I expected. I went in thinking it won't be a challenge but it was a challenge from the first minute to the last. I was sweating two minutes into the stretching and movements. And those movements are difficult. About 45 minutes into the workout I started to feel nauseated but the instructor reassured me it was expected for beginners. I definitely tried to do most of the movements but the key is to follow instructions and not look at others. Just focus on your movements.

Everyone was so warm and welcoming too. You get a welcome envelope and other students applaud you for completing the 1.5 hour session. It is HARD. And at times you will feel to just give up. But they push you. You are not there to rest and lay on mats but work and work hard. I was drenched after class but slept like a baby!

I don't know about the other ladies but my hair seems to be loving the heated room. I'm natural and my curls have been very bouncy and more defined since I went to my yoga class on Monday. On this basis alone I will try to take the class 3 times a week.:grin::grin:

Good luck and let us know how it goes (or went!)

none of the studios I've been to have carpet. Neither do they smell so I'd suggest people who want to try just go and visit and if they are comforatable with the appearance then to try.

Bikram is a beginner's series. It is intentionally limited in range of motion for safety and designed for 'westerners.' There are advanced Bikram asanas (poses) so after you master the first set you can move on, thus expanding your range of motion. If anyone is interested in the philosophy behind what poses are used, pick up Bikram's book. This stuff isn't just mindlessly thrown together. Hope this info helps.

since the kids are off starting today I'm going to start a week trial for $20(unlimited). I'd better get up on my water intake.

Which studios have you been to in NYC that were gross?

I've been to a lot of them and I can't think of any that were bad.

Awesome!! You're in NYC,right? What studio did you go to?

**Every Bikram studio that I've been to has been carpeted(it's mandatory). There are several different forms of hot yoga that are done on wood floors if the carpet bothers you. Is there a smell- Yes, just like in any exercise facility. You don't go to the gym expecting it to smell like roses.

Flat Iron. Their studio is very nice but it can get crowded, especially on evenings.

Yup, true, especially in a heated room where everyone has different body odors.

I just make sure to bring my own towels to class and not walk around barefooted.

i wonder how it would work if you slathered conditioner or some oil on your hair prior to going there?
maybe it would work as a deep conditioner?
Anyone tried this?
How do you think it would work?

Just wanted to share a link with the NY ladies. I discoveredd a verrrryyyy affordable yoga studio today. They have "hot yoga" classes--not sure if it's Bikram but for the prices I am NOT complaining.

http://www.yogatothepeople.com/new-york-yoga.shtml

The prices are by location. The location I plan to attend (38th street) charges $5 a class, YES $5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love Bikram but couldn't do the $150/ $175 a month for classes :nono: This place is an absolute Godsent

*There are also locations in Berkeley and San Fransisco.

Yoga to the people is great! My neghibor Leslie goes to the one on St. Marks...I've attended class with her and it's always PACKED!! I think it's wonderful what they're doing! That's a great alternative for ladies who can't afford Bikram classes right now. Thanks for sharing.

You're right though, it's not Bikram...what they offer is two different forms of "hot yoga". Hot Yoga can be any style of yoga(any combination of poses) performed in a heated room.

Bikram yoga is a very strict form of yoga...a true Bikram studio will never stray from the 26 poses, the class last 90 mins and the room is heated to 105 degrees. It's kind of like a discipline..

Are the benefits the same...Yes and no. You'll get glowing skin and you're going to sweat, but what I like about Bikram is that the 26 poses are done in sequence for a reason (and I think La Criolla(sp? sorry) was mentioning this before). You're compressing your organs and when you release them you're improving circulation and allowing oxygen to flow, getting rid of toxins. It improves your overall health.

I have been to numerous gyms and places throughout NYC and none of them have smelled as strange as a bikram yoga studio, I've been to several locations( times sq, chelsea, upper west side, etc,) to most people the smell is faint but I have a sharp sense of smell, it is not natural for something to smell mildewy and it can't be good for you nasal passages to be in that environment on a constant basis, thats just my 50cents. I'm one of many people who's noticed this smell I think over time it get trapped not only in the carpet but in the walls too. Different strokes for different folks, nothing gets past my nose, lol. Gyms don't smell like roses...but I haven't seemed any that smell like mildewy clothes that are damp either.

Yoga to the people is great from what I hear OP, also check out the 2010 nyyogapassbook from the ny health and fitness alliance. They also do books for Chicago and LA and do ones for gyms and pilates.
