It's the combination of several details that alone would not be viewed negatively.

High waisted plus tapered leg plus pleating and/or elastic bands and the pedestrian "denim blue" wash.

They accentuate the Buddha belly and unlike skinny jeans which taper throughout the entire leg mom jeans taper at the ankle. Creating an all around fug silhouette.

Got it. Based on the photos I'm guessing some of the problem is in the "how" (those belts, for instance) as well as the "what."
