From the age of 10 years old, I was subjected to the ordeal of dieting. Church members, family, doctors especially my mother constantly put me down, throughout my childhood, adolescent years, now as a grown woman i'm struggling to lose a whopping 8-9st even though I have managed to lose over 2 stones. I'm only 4,9, this makes me feel so miserable. I'm currently following the Atkins plan which seems to be working, but i'm battling with mixed emotions. I ask myself these questions:Will people perceive more positively? Will it change the way I feel about myself? I don't really know! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

They only thing I can say is you have to stop worrying about what other people will say and think and focus on doing it for yourself. When you have reached your goal nothing anyone says or does can take the feeling of satisfaction and accompishment away from you. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Den -

You gotta do it for yourself and because you want to. You have to be be happy no matter what you weigh. There are plenty of skinny flks who ain't happy.

Thanks for the advice Sweetcocoa, I think it may take sometime for me, to overcome the turmoils of being obese, and the issue of coping with the negativity perpetuated from very people I consult for in support.

Hey Den1. I was always overweight as a child. Nobody ever said anything about it and after struggling to lose the weight I wish they had said something earlier. I have lost over 100lbs which is something you want to do. My advice to you is that you should not diet. You should go on a healthy eating plan and you MUST exercise.

Sometimes we have unrealistic goals. When I started I wanted to lose 8 stone. My trainer actually told me that I would only need to lose 3 stone to get out of the overweight region. I would be in the 'prone to health risk' region but I would definitely be out of the obese and overweight region.

Weight loss will not happen through dieting. You could lose 10 or so pounds but you won't be able to keep it off. You need to incorporate exercise and you need a food plan that you can follow FOREVER.

You need small specific goals. Don't say I want to lose weight only. Say I want to lose 2lbs this week. I want to go to the gym, every other day. I want to cycle for 10 minutes, I want to cycle 30 miles this week.

Small specific goals give you something to look forward to and something to work towards.

Lastly, if people have a negative perception of you now, they will probably have a negative perception of you 30lbs less. Don't be concerned with what people think. Do what you need to do for your health. Don't be afraid to form relationships either, things won't fall in place if and when you lose weight. You shouldn't base your happiness on losing weight because you will be severely disappointed if things don't go according to plan.

Good luck and please EXERCISE EXERCISE EXERCISE!!! (Did I mention EXERCISE /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

I second everything Londongirl3 said. Don't diet. Diets work temporarily and I hear so much of girls who get sucked in the yo-yo thing of losing then gaining back the weight and so on so on. Just eat healthier and cut back on the bad foods and snacks. If you cut them out completely you may just crave them more.

Exercise is great, especially encorporating weight work as unlike aerobics, you continue to burn fat while resting too.

All the best Den1 /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

den, i know this friend of mine who is on the weight watchers diet. Sounds naff but it works. She likes the fact that you do not deny yourself anything, you just cut down. She also does power walking and such. Why not investigate it? The thing with the atkins diet is that there is a danger of getting manky breath problems. Try and incorporate an excerise that you would enjoy. F'instance, i like swimming so i do it three times a week.

It's not just manky breath but you will have really smelly poo and lots of farting too. High protein diets really come with some strange side effects /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Speaking of weight watchers, I have a co-worker that lost 10lbs. She wasn't enrolled in the whole program, she just purchased the points calculator to monitor what and how much to eat a day. She started in November and by January, she lost 10lbs. Now keep in mind she fought through Thanksgiving and Christmas food and cheated on the weekends so that's why it took her that long but I still thought that was good.

I also heard the Weight Watcher points system was a good plan. Many people enjoy it because they don't have to give up any type of food. It's all about moderation (which is definitely important).
