Okay, I just wanted to know this because I've been trying different.... rather strongly colored eyes and sometimes, I don't know what to do with my lips. Do you believe that when you play up the eyes you are supposed to downplay your lips? I don't really do bright lips... but I was just curious. TIA!

I'm by no means an expert but yes. Usually an MA will pair a smoky or bold eye with a more neutral lip and visa versa but makeup application is so versatile, I don't think there's a rule. I think you can do what you feel and as long as applied well you'll look fab.

I don't really do lipstick or really bold lip colors- I just wear close to neutral glosses with a liner. I've been seeing so many pretty colors on others, but I don't know what goes with my skintone... that's why I haven't tried any.

I have seen dark eye/dark lip and light eye/light lip work as well.

I'm the same way. I do mostly neutral, nude lips too. I have really yellow undertones and have problems finding bold lip colors that compliment my complexion.

I have a reddish undertone, but I'm just a punk when it comes to lip color. I'm not very daring... but I'm going to try to venture out a bit in the lip color dept. :yep:

What colors do you like right now? Anything particular catching your eye?

Pink is my fav color, but my skintone doesn't look all that great with a lot of the pinks I see. Also, I'm 31... can't be running around here looking like a pink frosted-lipped tiny bopper  Red is REALLY sexy (I wouldn't wear it often), with a slightly darker liner maybe- but I'd have to figure out what to do with my eyes. I don't like very dark lips... that's too goth for me. I'm just rambling with the stuff I just said, I haven't really given it a lot of thought yet, but I'm open to suggestions. Do you have any?

Yes. When you put dramatic makeup on your eyes, you have to keep your lip make-up neutral and when you have a bold colour on your lips, you'll probably look a bit over done if you have strong eye make-up.
To choose what's best for you, you need to look in a mirror and decide first which of your features stands out more (ie between your eyes and your lips). Then accentuate that feature.
My lips are definitly my stronger feature (very full) and pink NEVER suits me so i use a berry lip gloss or use berry+brown lipstick, and i always get compliments when i do this.
yep its bolder make up for some, but because everything else is very neutral, i get away with it.

:nono: Nope...haven't been looking really. I'll keep my eyes open for some new colors. Maybe some of the ladies like lilchocolatema and 1QTpie will chime in. I value their opinions...daoriginaldiva does some fierce artistry too.

No, not always. Check out the book my Kevin Aycoin called Face Foward, he did a nice breakdown of how to do either one and keep the balance in the face.

I think it looks good for dark eye and neutral lips or dark lips and neutral eye. I don't think it is attractive to have dark eyes and dark lips. I think that is just too much.

I think it depends on the look you're trying to achieve. Since I wear lots of eye makeup and bright colors 90% of the time, you will almost always see my with a neutral or soft lip. It's just something I prefer. When smokey eyes because a trend versus a look, it was almost a rule.
But trends change. Right now bold lips are being paired with serious eyes and of course that will change in a year too.
If you want to wear lip color and eye color I feel that you coordinate it, but make one much more dominate than the other. Like if I have a berry lip, I add that color on my eyes too, but I tone down the drama. Mostly so that I won't look like a clown. :lachen:
This is full on drama. It's very wearable, but probably not in the boardroom. I would pick one or the other for the daytime.

Well ya'll probably already know how I feel. I certainly do NOT believe that there are any rules when it comes to makeup. Do what makes you feel good. Play around at home, nobody is there to judge you and tell you what looks bad or good, and see what works. It does take some getting used to wearing a bold lip, most women I have encountered just do not feel comfortable wearing strong lips, especially paired with strong eyes. Right now that really is a trend, but like I said before do what works for you. Everybody has their preferences, and what may work or look good on one person, may not look good or work on someone else. Be daring, get out of your comfort zone, try something different you just might like it. If you don't it's only makeup, wipe it off and try something else.:)

Thank you all so much for coming in to help a confused sista out  I need all the help I can get. I'm gonna try a sexy deep (not as dark as that look posted- I'm scurred ) red lip... I will most likely do it with maybe a amber lights/bronze/similar red as lip matte outter corner/crease color fade thingy..... that sounds so pretty for a fall color. I can see it!! Wow, I need to shop for lip colors,a liner, and a matching eye color so I can practice. Thanks again ladies!!
ETA:: That does sound good... right? :perplexed::look:

:lachen::lachen: I've definately seen women like that walking around looking like that! Too dark of a lip color I would think is more for evening. These days for me though, I'm gonna have to skip that rule  I don't go out like I used to and special occasions are far and in between, so whoever sees me in the daytime with my sexy red lips are gonna have to just excuse me cuz Imma be vamping it up! :giggle::lachen::lachen::lachen:
