Hi. I found this out at my job (a health and natural product store). There has also been talk at my school (im in med school to be a N.D.). Most dentists will not tell you that what promotes teeth decay is the very thing they put in toothpaste: GLYCERINE! Look at the ingredients of every toothpaste brand, including the natural ones. Glycerine is in all of them. Just think if how sticky toothpaste is. In a study done glycerine was applied to the teeth of rats (sorry rats) and a sugar paste on the other. Overtime, the glycerine did twice as much damage and was twice as hard to scrub off teeth causing damage to the enamel. Google about glycerine and teeth and you'll get a ton of information. What is recommended is an all natural glycerine-free soap. Sounds gross, but it works! I wouldn't scrub your tongue with it but soap works! (I use Zum Bar soaps). If you think its crazy just think about photos you've seen of people in certain African countries, they have beautiful white teeth despite not using conventional toothpaste. While diet is part of this, the lack of glycerine packed toothpaste is too! Now getting more raw fruits and veggies as well as taking a good mineral supplement will help to restore enamel and build the teeth back up properly. I know it sounds crazy but look it up! Its worth a try. I can say I've been using soap for about 2 weeks now and i notice a difference in the way my teeth feel and the whiteness of them!

What kind of soap do you use and what mineral supplements? I think I need to build my enamel back up.
Thanks for the info!

Fluoride is also controversial. Google "fluoride kidney disease toothpaste". :perplexed

Between the oil pulling, the oil cleansing method (for my face), the ACV (weightloss), castille soap and the virgin coconut oil (FOR EVERYTHING) if I go home and announce I'm gonna be brushing my teeth with soap my hubby will have me committed. :ohwell: :lachen: :look:

I don't know about using soap but a lot of people just use baking soda and maybe rinse with listerine.

Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Castile Soap is very good for teeth. It has the same exact ingredients as Perfect Perscription Tooth Soap. The Castile Soap is just cheaper. I'll send you some info on both.

BTW, I use baking soda in the AM and Dr. Bronners in the evening. Btwn that and oil pulling, I haven't had any problems with my teeth/gums since.

In the Perfect Perscription Tooth Soap booklet, she says not to use baking soda but once a week because it is too abbrasive for the teeth to use everyday.

glycerin... bad for teeth, but good for hair?

yall sure it's the glycerin, and not the sulfates in toothpaste?

Yes its the glycerin! Although Im sure the sulfates are not good either, the glycerin is what sticks to your teeth and is difficult to remove! Think about it, glycerin coats the hair very well and you need a soap-like substance to take it off! Think about it on the teeth! It is also bad for gums as well.

Is this just for brushing or rinsing too? I rinse after I oil pull with 1/4 cup of water, 1/4 tsp baking soda and a capful of H2O2.

:lachen: INFO JUNKIE THAT IS SO TRUE. IF I TOLD MY FAMILY THAT I WANTED TO BRUSH MY TEETH W/ SOAP. I LEARNED AFTER TELLING THEM ABOUT USING MONISTAT FOR MY HAIR. I NEVER HEARD THE END OF THAT.

Thanks for this post. I knew fluoride was bad but I didn't know abougt glycerine.

I believe that tons of everyday products we use are bad for us and killing us. Seriously. I recently switched to an organic deodorant because I'm tired of getting boils under my arm and I have read information that suggests traditional deodorant can cause breast cancer. Have you guys ever scrubbed your armpits and noticed how hard it is to scrub off regular deodorant? It creates a film under your arms. It traps in all the bad stuff that our body is trying sweat out.

I switched to Tom's of Maine organic aluminum free deodorant. The apricot scent is heavenly and I see no difference in this and regular deodorant. I stay fresh and apricot-y all day! :yep:

(I use Zum Bar soaps).

hi Mamamia -

thanks for the information!
i looked into zum bar soaps, and their website says the soap has glycerin in it. :ohwell:

from the site: (http://www.indigowild.com/)
"In the soap-making process, saponification is the wand that works the Zum Bar soap's magic, naturally creating a little big thing called glycerin that leaves soap glistening in ultra moisturizing. Most big time soap makers remove the glycerin and sell it solo, but at Indigo Wild we think that's a big time soap no-no. So we rule it out and keep the glycerin where it belongs – in the soap."

I have recently stopped using regular toothpaste and switched to Dr. Bonner Peppermint Castile Soap but noticed that it has "retained glycerin" in it. I will have to find out more about "retained glycerin". I believe it is still better than traditional toothpaste my teeth certainly feel better since I stopped using regular toothpaste.

I ordered online "Food Grade 35% Hydrogen Peroxide" which is excellent for dental hygiene care. It gets rid of the bacteria critters found in the mouth and is a safe teeth whitener. Food Grade 35% Hydrogen Peroxide does not have any additional additives that is found in drug store bought peroxide.

Arm and hammer baking soda toothpaste does not contain glycerin. This is what I use.
