i knew this day was coming.
this sucks.
today is my official "i know for sure i'm lactose intolerant."
i used to be a kid that loved milk.
as i got older i realized my body was starting to respond funny to it and to cheese/cheese based products.

as of this and last year i'd get cramps and gas (though normally it was cramps) for a few hours later after eating ice cream or cheese.

well not today. i ate ice cream and not even 10 mins later my stomach was boiling. i was so mad! :wallbash: i love ice cream. it's my vice cause i don't care for chocolate at all :nono:.

i mean, i knew it was coming, but to have it full on sucks. oh well.

off to buy some lactose pills though i don't plan on depending on that...i just know i am really going to have to cut back on the cheese products. i don't drink a lot of milk but love ice cream.

and i love cheese based pasta sauces.

how do you lactose ladies cope? did you change your diet or do you just take a pill?

You are not alone boo. I suffer from IBS so milk products is a no no for me. But I do still enjoy ice cream, cheese in moderation. I do try to take a pill before I eat or after I eat dairy products. I'll suffer with you. sigh

I'm here with you too girl. I limit the amount of dairy products that I consume on a regular basis as well.

It seemed to start acting up when I hit my 20's, either that or I didn't notice before.
Cheese was not some thing that my mom stocked up on when I was growing up, generally only in Macaroni on Sundays. So I may have always been and just didn't know.

My dad says that he is Lactose Intolerant.. I wonder if it's genetic.

I am. I can't even eat much icecream. I can eat a small amount like the tiny amount in eggs and I love macorni and cheese. But, I can't eat a bowl of icecream or a glass of regular milk. Lactose free milk is good and doesn't have the slime regular milk has.

Interesting. You mean like what type of IBS I have?? I have never been told nor have I asked. My physician has just told me I have IBS and need to monoitor my condition with proper nutrition. What is funny or not funny is that I tell people I have IBS which I say is short for "I B Shi%$ting on myself". :lachen::lachen:I have to find humor in it otherwise it can make me cry. Before I was diagnosed with IBS even as a child my "stomach episodes" would be so bad that I would have panic attacks. I actually thought eating=me getting sick!

I've been, on and off: when I'd go for yearly tests I'd find dairy was OK one year, then I'd go dairy crazy and then develop sensitivities to it and it'd not be OK the following year.

So I just avoid it. In hay fever season, if I have dairy, you can bet your bottom dollar, I'll develop symptoms: stuffy nose, itching ears/throat... And in cold season, I get phlegm. So I just stick to almond vanilla milk.

Most people are LI and in denial. Humans are not designed to digest cow's milk nor any of it's byproducts. sometimes it takes a while to "catch up to us" because when we are younger our bodies are better equipped to process the toxins it's metabolization creates.

As we get older the the cells are damaged and the processes run less smoothly/efficiently. Do not fret or feel bad. there are hundreds of dairy alternatives for everything from cheese and ice cream to sour cream and a glass of milk. I am helping my husband transition from his milk/milk product addiction with weekly fasts and alternative products. he doesn't even miss it.

I wish you well.

Also stress reduction will help greatly with the IBS. Both kinds.

Welcome to the club....I just take almond milk..I hate eating sweets but when I get the urge for ice cream I like to eat, in the organic fridge section, soy ice cream or rice ice cream.

I hate that my stomach cant digest alot of food. But its best to know when you are younger what your body doesnt like as oppose to eating things when you are older. I believe Dr. Oz calls that aging your body prematurely by causing inflammation and diseases which can easily be solved if only you just change your diet.

aweee it will get better!!

when you stop eating it, you'll feel so much better that you won't want to eat it!
And it's exciting to find new foods to try- almond milk, hazelnut milk :lick: those are my best friends now!
plus tofutti "ice cream" sandwiches

also you can probably have goat milk, and goat cheese / Feta cheese. those don't affect people who are lactose intolerant :-)

stick with it for a couple of weeks then reap the benefits. For me, that was clear skin, no more 'random' runny nose, no more sore throats in the morning, no 'itis' and generally just feeling better.
i messed up and ate some cheese and cake/ice cream at a wedding this weekend and I"m STILL hurting

How do you know if you are lactose intolerant? I am beginning to wonder if I am.

I'm lactose intolerant. When I'm responsible I take a Lactaid pill or avoid milk. But often I just suffer through b/c of my love of diary. Especially if I know I'll be by myself for the next few hours when the consequences are kicking in.

I also find that if I keep up a regular intake of milk the symptoms subside some. If I haven't had milk in a while (milk messes me up the most) and then start having it again it's much worse.

I am also lactose intolerant, it was very difficult at first to adjust to the fact that am not going to be able to use milk again. I usually use soya products now(milk, ice-cream, whip cream) and since I love chocolate bars so much I have found myself a rice chocolate, taste really great I have to admit. I also use sheep cheese, not my fav. but when I make my pizza I need to have some form of cheese topping. I only use the tablet at special events, don`t want to use it everyday.

I have similiar symptoms as the ladies who have posted before me, but I have found that I have absolutely no issues when I drink Organic Milk or Goat's Milk and don't even need a lactid pill. I have drank organic milk for the last few years and have been just fine!

I've been lactose intolerant for about 24 years and have learned to manage in cow's milk-based world. I remember when Lact-Aid came in drop form only and you had to treat your gallon of milk with it for 24 hours before drinking. It was a great day when they introduced it in pill form and when they developed lactose-free milk.

I purchase Kirkland brand Fast Acting Lactase tablets from Costco - you can get a box of 180 individually wrapped tablets for about $15. I keep those with me in case I'm out and not sure of how certain foods were prepared when dining out. Breyer's makes a lactose-free vanilla ice cream, but you can't always find it...and I still need to take a few lactase tabs before consuming it because mine is that severe. So I rarely eat ice cream.

I read all food labels and try to keep to foods as natural as possible. I stay away from as much dairy as possible and take calcium to supplement. I also eat lots of spinach and broccoli and other calicum rich foods too.

I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything other than severe cramping, painful gas and explosive diarrhea. And I'm so okay with NOT feeling those symptoms.

Sad to say but I must suffer from both. Sometimes I have "C" then switch to "D". It all just depends on my body's mood I suppose. That is what is so frustrating.

Yeah... :look:

lactaid milk tastes sweet and yummy (or sweet and delicious as my mom loves to use to describe everything tasty from fish to fruit) to me though. It lasts quite a while! I never used to like milk.

I can't drink unheated soy milk because of my oral allergy syndrome and who wants hot soy milk all the time anyway?

ETA Oh, I also take probiotics and they seem to help with the tummy rumbles. My stomach is LOUD if I have dairy and don't take them.

Same here. I didn't know about lactose intolerance at all or I could have saved myself some embarrasment. My husband (then boyfriend) invited me down to FL where he was working for a couple of weeks. The last day we went out for icecream and I had to rush him back to the hotel. He's outside the bathroom laughing and giving me updates on how long I had till my plane left and kept asking if I thought I was gonna make it.

I finally realized I was intolerant when a coworker pointed it out to me. I'd have my bowl of cereal and by the time I got to work I'd STAY in the bathroom in the morning until on day she asked if I was okay. :look:

I live on Lactaid brand products (ICECREAM!) because I just can't be bothered with a pill.
