I don't red meat, turkey or pork and I only eat chicken every once in a while, mainly when I go out to eat. My main source of protein is fish. I eat it every other day most weeks. I have been eating a lot of whiting lately because it is cheap and you can find it just about ANYWHERE! I used to eat a lot of salmon but it is expensive and there was some report a few years ago about it not being safe to consume in certain areas. I don't like Codfish. I never did. I don't know why. But that's as far as my knowledge of tasty fishies goes. Salmon and whiting. I have heard of some other types but as far as healthy fishies, that is all I know, (and I don't even think whiting is on that list but it is cheap). I am starting to get sick of whiting. It's like chicken- whether you grill it, bake it or fry it, it always tastes the same. I am looking for semi healthy fish recipes using other types of fishies. Does anyone know of any? Jaaaade! I'm looking in your direction. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

What!!! You don't like Codfish... girl I love it.
I'm not sure of the contents or taste of Ornge Roughy, but check on that too. A friend of mine says it's really good.

Tuna? Yuck! I never eat tuna! It looks like someone already chewed it up and spit it into a can. What is Mahi Mahi and Orange Roughy? Where do I find it and how does it taste? How the heck do you prepare it?

Fish contains Mercury. Please keep eating them to a minimum.

HoneyRockette you are a mess. I have to doctor tuna up but you are right... it does look "recycled" if you will.
I'm not sure of how Orange Roughy tastes or how to make it. Everytime my girls and I go out to eat, one girl orders it and keeps humming about how good it is. I get so tempted to knock the fork out of her hand. I see it in the grocery stores. Try a lil' search on the net for the nutritional contents... I plan to try it one day.
I agree the tuna in the can does look chewed up. How about Albacore tuna steak or yellow fin tuna? You can usually get these from the seafood department (fresh fish) of most grocery stores. They don't taste like the tuna in the can. Mahi-Mahi can usually be found in the seafood department too. Both tuna steak and mahi-mahi have a very light, mild taste and are great grilled.

HoneyRockette -
Orange roughy is a light white fish. 4oz serving yeilds 21g of protien, 1 g of fat and 0g carbs. I either steam it, bake it or grill it (use one of those foil bags, it falls apart easily). I like lemmon pepper flavouring on mine. Its my favourite fish and when I am getting ready to compete. I eat it everyday.
I don't really know how healthy it is, but my favorite fish is Catfish, followed by Salmon.

I know. I said "fishies" with an "i" which is what my daughter says. It just sounds cute. Thanks for the recommendations!

What is the difference between "white fish" and "whiting fish"? Isn't whiting white? I feel like I should already know the answer but I don't.

Whiting is the name of a fish. But "White" fish referrs to the flesh. So it includes Orange roughy, flounder, cod and "whiting"!

Yea, HoneyRockette!
What's with the fishies? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif That's really cute!
Carrie is right about whiting being a white fish. She's also right about the Roufie (sp?)
Actually, to answer your question. I agree with Amilion, all fish contain some level of mercury so what you want to look for are fish which contain lower levels. I will see if I can pull my full list, but the ones I eat regularly are very low.
As I have stated many times, one small tin of albacore per month and no more. Tuna is high in mercury.
Anyway, I LOVE WHITING. Can't get it fresh around here, let alone frozen. The frozen stuff tastes like paste.
I would suggest: rainbow trout, salmon, sea bass, halibut, flounder, red snapper. And, definitely get some sea scallops...extremely nutritious..it's on that list I posted of the World's Healthiest Foods. Definitely check out that site for info on fish and great recipes.
With your diet, try to rotate the fish with chicken and turkey and meatless meals.
Cheers,
Jade
You can get tuna that it is not in the can. You can get it in filet form also like regular fish. I have tasted grilled tuna which is delicious and the best form to eat it in (regular fishy style)
