I have opted to minimize storing my lunches in plastic bags and containers, my water in plastic containers, use of the microwave and drinking bottled water. I have learned that many plastic products contain a chemical called dioxin that can leak out in food in water. I understand most products are sold in plastics, but I am trying to do healthier things on my end to reduce any additional exposure to anything as I can. Same with microwaves http://www.ghchealth.com/microwave-ovens-the-proven-dangers.html

In addition to the above, I have also halted my consumption of bottled water. By doing this, I am reducing my use of plastic plus keeping some change in my pocket . What I have decided to do is purchase a glass pitcher to bring with me to my job to drink water instead of spending $1.00 on bottled water. I also am boiling my water like the ol' folks did back in the day to kill germs and bacteria instead of buying a water filter that will cost money for the unit and the replacement filters

What are you doing that's cost effective and health conscious?

Thanks for the info. So how will you carry/store your lunches?

Yea I need to stay away from microwaved foods. In college I was always having something microwaved. If I want to re-cook something i'll strive to just cook it over the stove or oven.

Dang my dad bought a whole bunch of bottled water. I've been hearing bad things about it but, I wasn't sure what exactly was bad. Well, now I do and thanks :).

Good thread, I don't microwave that much but when I do . I re-heat in a plate or Corning ware.

As far as the water, I'm proud of myself because once I heard how many plastic bottles we've put out there I stopped buying bottled water altogether and I never went back. I've been doing this for months now and I don't miss it at all.

I live In NY where we have good drinking water right out of the fountain anyway . I also have a filter on my fridge so why was I doing that? I must have spent mucho bucks on bottled water . It's funny how we can get caught up in things and just do it cause everyone else is walking around with bottled water.

I carry my water now in those plastic bottles that are supposd to be safe but I'm going to buy the aluminum bottles now, they can be found at www.sigg.com (http://www.sigg.com).

Another thing we can do is don't buy or use styrofoam plates at all especially at all those good Summer BBQ's coming up.

I also use pyrex bowls. I have a glass water bottle from Voss

that I use for my green smoothies and I have a number of metal thermos' that I got from Target.

Great thread, it's got me thinking about what to carry my water in.

I don't use a microwave, i refuse to use one.
