Is the only difference between these two diets the fact that Atkins lets you eat any kind of meat and South Beach limits the fatty meats like chicken wings/pork?

No the south beach after the first phase lets you eat the good carbs. Atkins doesn't let you eat carbs at all. South Beach is healthier.

I agree. I did Atkins a while back to just lose a few pounds and it was weird being able to eat bacon and all types of fatty foods.

I bought the SB book and it is overall much healthier. It also seems more practical as a lifestyle change, versus a diet. It would be difficult for me, personally, to eat mainly protein w/o fruit and lots of veggies.

I thought atkins reintroduces you to good carbs after the two weeks as well.

I think that you have to implement your own good judgement when it comes to what's "allowed" whereas, South Beach is a little more direct about reducing fat.

Atkins does discuss good carbs, but it's the fat that concerns me too.

During Atkins you have 20 carbs a day during Induction. Induction is 2 weeks or more depending on how much weight you need to lose. After 2 weeks or more you start introducing more carbs into your diet. They recommend berries.

You don't have to coat your food in fat, I don't simply b/c my stomach can't handle that amount of grease but there are people out there that butter their bacon and prefer greasy food.

To me, Atkins is more strict than the other programs out there. I would rather eat some fruit and veggies with my meals. I'd also like to mention that you can use healthy oils, i.e. olive oil, safflower oil, peanut oil in place of butter. Or you can use butter with the other oils so you won't have to worry about your elevated cholesterol levels. I don't do Atkins. All I do is eliminate the simple carbohydrates (white flour, white rice, potatoes, and sugar), eat lean protein, fruits and
veggies, use polyunsaturated oils, and always, drink plenty of water. Then I would gradually add my whole grain foods and Splenda-sweetened foods. I think littles steps is the key. Toodles

You may indeed, have carbs on Atkins once you are past induction. What Atkins requires is that YOU figure out how many carb grams YOUR body can tolerate and still lose/maintain (depending on where you are in your weightloss goal) weight.

It never recommends white bread or rice or pasta but real, unprocessed food. Just like our ancestors used to eat. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I haven't read South Beach - but it sounds like it's just amore modified version of the same diet. Allowing slightly more carbs for people who can handle them or need them because of body chemistry.
