There are so many conflicting bits of information out there: some say sucralose (splenda) is safer, some say aspartame (equal, nutrasweet) is safer. Which is it? http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/whyme.gif

Sucrolose (Splenda) is DEFINITELY safer than aspartame.

Aspartame causes the body to gain weight and is the cause behind many serious diseases. It can also cause death.

This is unbelievable. My mother has been telling me for weeks to switch over to Splenda and throw my equal away. But I did not listen to her. After reading this...I feel stupid. Thanks for sharing this. As I type this, my equal is goint to the garbage...*off to apologize to mother*

In this country, almost all diet drinks are made with aspartame.

True! I don't have a problem with drinking water - I'm just going to miss my coca-cola very much http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I'll try the Rite drinks and see how those go.

Here is an exerpt from that website pressncurl was referring to. I couldnt access it through the link I had to find it searching mayclinic.com. Thanks Pressncurl...

Saccharin (sak-UH-rin). Created in 1879, saccharin — the first artificial sweetener — is 300 to 700 times sweeter than sugar. The range accounts for people's different sensitivities to sweetness.
The FDA proposed a ban on saccharin (Sweet'n Low) in 1977, after laboratory tests on rats suggested it might cause bladder cancer. The ban was never enacted, though, and saccharin was removed from the list of cancer-causing agents as no links were found between saccharin and cancer in humans.

Saccharin is particularly popular as a tabletop sweetener in restaurants, where it's available in single-serving packets. Saccharin is also used in diet soft drinks and baked goods.

Aspartame (AS-pahr-tame). This substitute was first approved in 1981 and is 180 to 200 times sweeter than sugar. It's used in beverages, breakfast cereals, desserts and chewing gum and is also used as a tabletop sweetener.
Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal) is often the subject of stories in the popular press and on the Internet claiming that the product causes a variety of health problems, such as headaches, tumors, seizures, panic attacks, hyperactivity and multiple sclerosis.

According to the FDA, however, aspartame is the most thoroughly tested and widely studied food additive the agency has ever approved. More than 100 studies confirm that aspartame is safe for the general population.

Aspartame is not safe, though, for people who have the rare hereditary disease phenylketonuria (fen-ul-ke-to-NU-re-uh) or PKU. Products made with aspartame must carry a PKU warning on the label.

Acesulfame-K (uh-SEE-sull-fame). First approved by the FDA in 1988, acesulfame-K (Sunett) is often blended with other sugar substitutes, such as aspartame, to produce a more sugar-like taste. About 200 times sweeter than sugar, acesulfame-K is now approved for baked goods, frozen desserts, candies and beverages. More than 90 studies have concluded that acesulfame-K is safe.
Sucralose (SOO-krah-lose). This sugar substitute, the only artificial sweetener made from sugar, is 600 times sweeter. Sucralose (Splenda) is often used in baked goods, soft drinks, chewing gum, frozen dairy desserts, fruit juices and gelatins. More than 100 studies over 20 years have found no link between sucralose and any health problem.
Neotame (NEE-oh-tame). The newest artificial sweetener available to consumers is neotame. This general-purpose sweetener is approximately 7,000 to 13,000 times sweeter than sugar. In July 2002, the FDA approved this sweetener for baked goods, soft drinks, chewing gum, confections and frostings, gelatins and puddings, jams and jellies, and processed fruits and fruit juices. In reviewing more than 110 studies, the FDA determined that neotame is safe for human consumption.
