Ladies, I chose this forum to get the word to as many women as possible. In December I was hospitalized with a blood clot in the lungs, I am lucky to be here. After tests it was discovered that I had a mutated gene (blah etc.) Factor 5 Lieden is the name. So I had to get my kids tested to see if they also had it. I got the results this morning. My youngest boy is fine but my eldest son and my daughter also have it. The doctor said that maybe 10% to 15% of the population could have it but unless a family member gets a clot then no one gets tested. For the eldest boy he will probably never experience a clot so no precautions are necessary but for my daughter when she is of age, she cannot go on birth control pills or similar hormonal treatment. The reason I am writing this is to say, as a precaution if you or your daughter is going on the pill get a blood test to make sure that you are not at risk for a clot, it may not be what I had but something else but GET A BLOOD TEST BEFORE GOING ON THE PILL. That's all folks.

Wow! PE is no joke. I'm glad your ok and you thought about it enough to get your kids tested. This is really something to think about if your going to be on hormonal therapy.

What other method of BC are you using since being diagnosed?

Actually I am not using any. I did not need it for birth control but to regulate my period. I had tubal ligation a few years ago.

That's interesting you said that because I wanted a tubal ligation and my doctor talked me out of it. She said that because I had painful periods that she would have to put me on the pill. I didn't understand why  she said that so I didn't push it.

Make sure you get a blood test first. I was on the pill off and on for years, I got the tubal ligation because I knew I wanted no more kids, but my period was erratic, so doctors use the pill to regulate the period also.

Thanks for the heads up but I already have the Mirena. :ohwell:

I've taken birth control on and off too. I didn't have any problems but will request the test on my next visit.

You are I think the second person on this board that reported a clot. There was another member that had a DVT. I wonder if she had the same syndrome.

Whoa- thank you for the heads up! I just started Yaz a few days ago and it's the first BC I have ever had because I think MisterMan might kill me if he has to go through another on of my crazy periods again.
