To me they just seem like water and not much vit. and min. Can someone enlifghten me? Wouln't it be better to just stick to furit and veggies with a little more nutritional substance. I'm just wondering if eating all this lettuce is doing me any good.
Is salad good from a fibre perspective, fills you up so you eat less?? TIA

Your 2nd question about fibre is why I eat it. Also if I eat my entire salad first, I feel full and eat less of the main course.

to make salads more substantial I'd add fish or chicken so you've got the protein aspect included. Also, you feel less hungry after eating a protein salad or meal over one without.

I eat salads because my mama said so and she would be dissapointed if I didn't.
Everytime I think about skipping it, my mother's voice comes into my head and I'll guiltily get some. I'm not even living at home but she has some serious grip on my head.
I do know that it is good for you because
1. Fibre (no constipation, makes you full)
2. Green salads have a good iron and vitamin D content (Healthy skin, good blood circulation)
3. Carrots have vitamin A ( Production of eye pigments that help you to adjust from light to dark)
4. Low calorie content ( Good for slimmers)
5. A good selection of cations ( Zinc and Copper especially)
6. YOUR mom would be proud of you.

Thanks so much ladies /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I know that salads are good for you but, just really couldn't say why. Those are some very good reasons. I like the suggestion about adding fish or chicken. I'm think of adding a bit of tuna to my salad today for lunch and see how I like it. Chasing after little kids all day long, I could use the extra boost!
Thanks again.

the darker or more colorful the vegetable or fruit the higher the vitamin content I believe! Good luck

NayNay , major cudos! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
And, shinyblackhair , plenty of nutrients...vitamins, minerals, and er um......phytonutrients...those enzymes which keep untold number of processes in your body running smooooothly and efficiently.
Perhaps you might enjoy many types of lettuce? Have you ever tried Boston, Romaine, Red (that's my favorite and one of the most nutritious!). Just anything other than the Iceburg which is okay, but nutrient-wise, not way up there /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

i make my own salads i get very creative too just like brown relaxed hair i add chricken, shrimp, tuna, mushrooms because eating a plain salad with no substance will not fulfill your hunger. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I say, the point of eating a salad is that you gain vitamins and nutrients from live foods. When you cook/steam veggies and etc, you kill the nutritional aspect. I think a post like this, Carrie could provide excellent insight.
But like I said, it's because the salad is live or something like that.
I don't necessarily think that salads are that rich in vitamins, but I believe the point of eating salads is to get full on few calories.

I heard salads could be more fattening the a BIG MAC. Some people douse it with soo much dressing, meats, eggs, croutons that it defeats the purchase.
Funny you say about the vitamins...Then I wonder, what's really the purpose lol.
I agree, that the dressings, eggs & croutons can and will make a salad higher in calories than if they were omitted. But atleast a salad has the potential to be low in calories if the right ingredients and salad dressing is applied, a Big Mac on the other hand? Well, that's a lost cause. /forums/images/graemlins/look.gif
