I am really sorry to read that. (((( HUGS )))) to you and your son.

Did the doctor give you any tips on how to manage it? I don't know if you believe in alternative medecine but Kevin Trudeau has 2 great books out on how to cure specific diseases naturally. Don't get down, although I know it's hard. God is there for you and your son and loves you both tremendously!

At that age, I'm not sure if it is anything you did. I was just watching somewhere where there is a treatment for babies to prevent this. But I think your son may be too old. They have to be treated before diagnosed.

My 4 year old nephew has hight cholesterol.

Don't worry too much, my niece was diagnosed with the same illness last year at 6 years  of age
She's a trooper though, she is taking her own shots and takes as much control over her treatment as anyone could at that age. Her parents were in shock, especially my brother who had a feeling something was wrong with her for a long time.

At first she got really skinny and after a few months she was diagnosed with gluten allergy. Just a few weeks after that, she was also diagnosed with diabetes. She was at my mother's home and she drank :drink: like a mad person. My mother immediately suspected diabetes. She urged my brother to take her to the doctor for a test as soon as possible. Well, they didn't even have time to go to their doctor, because later that night she was on her way into a coma. She tried to go to the bathroom in the kitchen trash can! They raced to the hospital and she was lucky to get there in time. We were heart broken. This little child has been through so much!

Looking at her now, she's a completely different child. She gained almost 5 kilos in a week after she was diagnosed! She was eating and eating, she was probably malnourished from the two diseases. Now she's the right size, energetic... :littleang

My brother had 6 months of shock, but now they're travelling and enjoying life again. Sure, sometimes she will backfire and just refuse to take her medicine. At those occasions the only way to get her to take it is to wait until she's hungry and then say that she can't have anything to eat before she takes her shot.

She also doesn't want to show friends that she takes shots. Some kid was teasing her in school, but that's sorted now. It's a roller coaster ride, but I'm sure your son will be fine too and soon :yep:

Oh, and diabetes type 1 has zero to do with what you have given him to eat etc. It's sometimes hereditary, sometimes they don't know the reason. But the reason is not being over weight or lack of exercise etc. It's a completely different disease from diabetes type 2.

I'm sorry to hear this Val. Make sure that you get her to a pediatric endocrinologist. There are so many treatments out there now. She will be fine and she's blessed to have a concerned mommy. :yep:

Oh my goodness. I know what you are going through. I pray that your child is well and able to cope with this. type ! is not caused by anything it is usually something someone is born with it is not diet related.

We just had the weekend from hell because our dr suspected that my niece had it and we went in yesterday for a glucose intolerance test but thankfully we are in the clear so far.

It is really important to get educated about diet and meds because it is easily controlled but if it is not controlled then it can cause lots of other illnesses.

Take care and I am praying for you and your family

My younger brother was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabtes when he was 8 also. He is 18 now and a healthy, well-adjusted young man. He has an insulin pump now and lives his life just like any other 18-year-old.

Your son and your family is gonna be ok. I know things are ROUGH right now, but just know that everything will be ok. :yep: And if you live in a large city, I believe they usually have support groups for parents of children who just got diagnosed. You should look into that

My Gosh ladies,

I haven't been near a computer in a couple of days but when I got on today, I was really out done. Flowerhair thank you so much because your story was very much like my sons. We got him there just in time. His blood sugar was 770 and he was so swollen lower body that his penis had dissappeared. I want to thank ALL of you ladies that have responded because you have given me hope. You all were truly sent by GOD and I thank you. I am truly blessed to have found LHCF and you all. Now I'm going in the bathroom and cry. Be right back! (smile)

(((Hugs to you))). My children do not have diabetes but, I have worked in diabetes for 10 years. I have sold insulin for adults and children. Find a good pediatric endocrinologist and a good pediatric certified diabetes educator. Medication and education are equally important with diabetes. I know it is scary and especially since it is your child. Us mothers would rather go through "it" than have our children have to:nono:. Take each day one day at a time and you will find your way through, there is a tremendous amount of information out there and people who want to help you. The links given earlier were excellent, for support try the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) www.JDRF.org (http://www.JDRF.org) , they are focused on a cure.

Best wishes to you and your child.

I am a Type 1 Diabetic and have been since 1997. It's nothing to be sorry about.. Yes there are numerous complications that could arise but there are twice as many ways to maintain good sugars and great overall health.

I do not expect any sympathy but do expect but a certain amount of understanding with this life-long disease. Over the course of the 10+ years I have not endured any serious complications except for the occasional low sugar.

If you have questions feel free to PM me.I would be more than happy to share some of my experiences.
