Let's discuss some practical ways to break sugar addiction. Just read a thread about how similar sugar is to cocaine. Has anyone broken their sugar addiction? Should we all just go low-carb or go raw? Maybe this can turn into a challenge.

This would be helpful info.
I've done the Zone before, which helped me lower it, and I did lose SOME cravings. But I didn't have a long term attitude of sugar reduction so once I lost the weight I stopped. Sugar is such a powerful drug, I know I get a bit antsy when I've just a day w/o it or any processed foods.
So is it better to do is gradually like most weign themselves off of other drugs or cold turkey?

I've had a hard time with sugar and processed foods in general. I have tried to give up sugar cold turkey... no luck there. I was able to lose weight but that's because I reduced calories and exercised more. So I guess there was some sugar reduction in there somewhere. I tend to eat low cal/low fat dessert after dinner & would like to change this and eat fruit instead. Would appreciate any tips on how to get off this stuff. LOL

Yeah, I'm a major addict. I've been weaning myself off over the last year. I tried cold turkey a few times with low-carb, but I realized that would never work for me. Still have a ways to go though.
I once read that if sugar was just discovered today, there is no way it would get approved for consumption given all the side effects.

This is gonna sound weird...but weird enough to work!??!
So with all the fad diets around, I read about the "Baby Food Diet", where you...eat baby food.... So I went and got some.... Now the so-called
"dinners" were just WRONG! LOL! But I discovered that I liked the cereal/fruit combos. I ate one oatmeal/apple type one one morning and I was ok (I probably should have had something else with it) but it was good. And I had another kind as a dessert and it was helpful.... Plus, it was economical!
I am being more careful about my sugar intake as diabetes tries to run in my family but not over here!
Any thoughts on that?

Maybe the reason baby food works is because of portion control?

This is funny:lachen::lachen:
I made a hoax email to a friend talking about the benefits of a "baby food diet", I thought I made that up...I guess not, or maybe someone got a hold of my email and took it seriously:nono:
I can't believe there is a real diet out there like this. Most baby food has just as much trash in it as regular processed adult food though:perplexed

When ever I crave something with lots of sugar I just eat low fat vanilla yogurt and/or fruit. Sometimes I'll mixt them together if I really want to satisfy my urge for sugar.
Low carbing help me break my addition and or avoid sugar but when I did attempt to go back I got so sick I just say "F that right there." It tore my stomach up and it made me sick I literally had headaches and didn't feel right.

This maybe hard for some but i just stopped eating it. Some sugars in fruit and such can't be avoided, but i eat no sweets, no corn syrup, no fructose, no fruits high in sugar content, no juice, No processed foods and i also take vitamin b complex. Some days are harder than others but after the first 2 weeks it gets easier. If you can get through the detox, the cravings get less and less. And the things i do crave are wierd like ketchup and bananas or grapes. But i hardly crave sweets anymore.

I heard someone here say that when you're craving sugar you need more protein.
Sugar is my weakness :(

I don't have a sugar addiction, more like a slight dependency of sugar substitutes. However, when I am trying to eat clean, I eliminate all sugar and sugar substitutes from my diet. I've found that drinking herbal tea and lots of water helps with the cravings.

Yes they do help alot, especially late at night if your hungry. I always have a cup of tea before bed.

The only way that has worked for me has been low carbing, and I find if instead of the junk I have fruit it works, even though in my mind I will be thinking, this apple ain't gonna cut it, I want some cookies, but once I actually have the apple I'm good.

I wish eating fruit worked for me but it doesn't because a lot of fruit has the same amount of sugar as ice cream. So then I'm like I may as well eat my popsicle and be satisfied.
I'm starting to think there's no way to break it. I'll just have to eat more healthy stuff to compensate.

I agree with you post.
Most folks with sugar cravings have to give it up COLD TURKEY, because even telling yourself that you'll only have a little each day will start you back to increasing your intake.
I agree with the poster that said increasing protein helps. Protein not only speed up your metabolism, but it decreases your cravings. Having 3-4 ounces of lean protein per meal (seafood, chicken, turkey, etc.) with a healthy carb (low sugar fruit, non-starchy veggies, sweet potato, brown rice) and healthy fats (flaxseed oil, avocado, nuts) should cure the cravings of even the most stubborn sugar cravers.
You have to give yourself 2-4 weeks to get rid of the cravings, but it can be done.
I've also read that sugar cravers can benefit from L-Glutamine:
