There seems to be some interest in discussing HFCS. I don't know much about it other than that it is sugar.

You know, getting rid of Transfats started just like this. It took about 10 years to gain steam, but the activists won in the end.

So, let's talk.

What make HFCS so bad is that it supresses your body's natural ability to tell you that you are full. You are better off eating cane sugar out of a jar with a spoon.

YIKES! YIKES! YIKES!!!! I gotta process this....

So then what does the body do to inform itself that it is full? Is it a mental versus a physiological thing?

No its a physical thing. The chemicals you brain sends to you tummy to stop eating b/c yuo aer full are suppress by HFCS (I can't remember the name of the chemicals right now but I will post it later) This is why it is so bad for you.

I avoid it as much as possible. I remember going to Kroger one day and wanting to buy some whole grain bread and I read every single last label of the say 40 different breads in the bread section and all but one variety of bread had HFCS in it. It was the wheat and fiber by Nature's Way. Even the so-called healthy seven-grain and whole-grains had HFCS in it. I was appalled! It is in canned tomatoes, and so many things. I am an avid label reader, but some people are not and they are consuming this stuff in foods that they have no idea would even contain HFCS.

GymFreak is right. This is really bad stuff! I try to stay away from it.

If I see something has High Fructose Corn Syrup, I put it back.

But it's sooo addictive! It took me forever to stop craving Coca-Colas and carbonated drinks. Now, I drink mostly water. I feel less bloated and feel better too. I also don't have the "munchies" like before.

HFCS is NOT good for you... PERIOD. Do not eat. Especially if you are trying to trim down.

That is why I don't shop in reg food stores anymore.

Pepperidge Farm has 2 breads, that I know of, w/o HFCS- Soft Honey Wheat and Soft Honey Oat. I make my own pancake "syrup" now (I don't like straight natural maple) and I only buy organic ketchup. I would rather take a longer drive and pay higher prices to avoid HFCS. I can't remember the name of the book or medical journal that first made me aware of all the dangers, as it was several years ago. If I remember or find out I'll post the source. I just remember stopping at "Brain Lethargy" and the list was quite long and disturbing up until that point.

when i was little i used to like to read ingredients in food and i would always see corn syrup and i'd wonder why it was in everything. i just thought it was it was normal:ohwell:

You are SO right! I get this Sara Lee brand that's whole grain. HFCS is everywhere, so beware!
