I called a cosmetic center today that specializes in botox, etc., and does microdermabrasion as well. The person I spoke with asked me what I expected to achieve and I told them I wanted something to diminish my active acne, and help fade my acne scars/hyperpigmentation.

The guy told me that microdermabrasion doesn't help with that much! :perplexed He said that it doesn't really fade any scarring or eliminate active pimples. He suggested that people looking for what I'm looking for go to a dermatologist and inquire about Accutane, etc. I was kinda surprised....?

What?! My esthetician(sp?) says microdermobrasion is helpful with scars and hyperpigmentation. I've had one treatment so far (I'm rotating it with peels), and I've noticed a subtle improvement (its still early to tell). I would go to another place and get a second opinion!

Yeah, I would get a second opinion. A few years ago I was doing micro regularly and it DEFINITELY helped calm my skin down and even out the tone. I very highly recommend it, particularly in the beginning stages of turning your skin around.

I will say that it seemed most beneficial once I had gotten the actual breakouts under control. It was wonderful for clearing out the scarring, particularly when I followed it with a glycolic peel.

I agree to get a second opinion. Preferably from one who has a background in AA skincare.

Like you guys have suggested I'm going to get another opinion; I had really had my mind set on getting microdermabrasion done; at least to give it a try. I have an appt with my derm. who does them, but he's booked til Feb and I wanted to try it out before then.

If anyone has any recommendations on a place in Atlanta please pm me. I may go to Natural Body Salon & Spa, I've had a massage and facial before there and they did well. Now, I don't know that they necessarily specialize in African American skin care, though...? What questions are necessary for me to ask them before deciding on who to go with to do my microdermabrasion??

I may post this in the Off Topic forum, too....

TIA!

Its all black staff and they do microdermabrasions for 140.00...ive never went for that but was thinking about going or asking about it to see if it could even my skin and lighten some of the dark spots....

Its in the Cascades area(i guess thats what it is) of ATL....they are really friendly and nice....

I would get a second opinion as suggested earlier. Someone that works with AA clients. I have had microdermabrasion and it did help with some minor pigmentation issues that I had from a minor acne breakout.

I completely disagree with this. I'm the girl that had a horrid breakout after a wax peel at an Asian beauty place. My face was left with plenty of dark spots and the acne did go away until I took meds prescribed by my dermatologist. Still, the dark marks remained. This happen back in June. I got three microdermabrasion treatments since then, it helped tremendously my skin is almost 100%. I have no acne and my skin is very smooth, my tone is coming back too. I have one treatment left to complete my series. Microdermabrasion worked wonders for me and believe me my skin was a wreak.

most def seek a second opinion

Do u think the at home microdermabrasion kits will work just as good? Like the Neutrogena one?

I've heard this before, that microdermabrasion is not recommended for someone with active acne as it may irritate the skin more thus causing more acne break outs. The treatment is good to help soften the skin and even out skin tone but it is not an acne treatment.

When I had alot more money to play around with, I used to go to the spa faithfully for microdermabrasion & facials. I had it done on my face & back & it cleared up almost all of the spots on both. It also helped, though did not completely cure, my acne. I was also using one of those expensive dropper bottles of Phyto something. I think it was green & was like a Vitamin C for the face or something. It's been so long ago. If you don't have a good dermatologist here in Atlanta, let me know. I go to a really good one & I'm actually set to start back on the microdermabrasion at the beginning of the year. I'm going to do before & after pics.
