I don't know about some of you ladies, but when my cycle comes, the cramps come hard. I was in a class one year and we were discussing medications used in labor and delivery(I'm glad I paid attention that day).Anyway, the professor mentioned that medications like Ibuprofen and aspirin can actually make cramps and the flow worse-this is a side effect from those meds. I could not believe it because since 12 years old, they were like my wonder drugs, but after he discussed this,it made since. My cramps were worse after the effect wore off. Okay,to the point, he discussed that Magnesium Oxide is used to delay the uterine contractions in labor and delivery. When he said this, the wheels in my head began turning and I decided to give the magnesium supplements a try, afterall, the uterus contracts when cramping ,too. Okay---why do they work!!! It takes a while (for some you may have to take them 3 days before your cycle)but they work!! I still take 2 Ibuprofens on my first menstrual day,but after that it is me and my mag. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thank you for sharing! I have had the worst cramps for the past 10 years. I take several Ibuprofen and use a heating pad on the first day. I'm going to try this out. Can I find magnesium supplements form puritan's pride?

I usually buy any magnesium supplement-what's puritan pride?
I use the Country Life brand of Calcium/Magnesium tablets, not for menstrual cramps but I've learned it's good for us to take anyway. After your post. Bublinbrnsuga, I may up my dosage before my period starts! Thank you!
Thanks for the info! to add something in here: I also find that eating only natural sugars ( fruits... ) when you have those sugar cravings a few days before your period starts can also be helpful. Just a little observation

What I do is take two each day of my cycle. Like mentioned before,I still cramp, but I believe this is due to the fact that I don't take them 3 days before my cycle. Nevertheless, my cramps are no where near as bad as they used to be. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Puritan's pride is like a warehouse that sells nutritional supplements for very low prices. www.puritanspride.com (http://www.puritanspride.com) is the website.

I haven't had cramps in 11 years.
I know it is due to exercise.
I also have a diet high in Omega 3, 6, 9 oils and Gamma Oils.
Flax seed, Borage, Fish oil,
Ust 3-4 days a week of cardio and these oils will eliminate cramps for ever. The only way I know that I am about to begin my cycle is because I crave a Sprite. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Other than that I don't touch soda.
I have a cure too http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif but you have to have a boyfriend for it http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/kiss2.gif

I believe it works because magnesium relaxes muscles as you were mentioning before with the uterine contractions. I originally got the supplements a few years ago because I woke up with a major, painful cramp in my leg, the kind that makes you want to scream. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif After it subsided, I went to the health store and a nutritionist said the calcium/magnesium combo will cure the cramp very quickly (it worked the first day!). She said I had a deficiency of magnesium in my body and the Country Life brand had the correct ratio of calcium to magnesium. She also said people who continue to have muscle cramps and do not take magnesium (or get it in their food)and have heart disease in their history, can be prone to heart attacks when the heart muscle cramps up. So I wonder if severe cramping (not regular cramps) during our periods indicates a lack of magnesium in the body...
Also, Sterry is right about the Omega oils and exercise. It really does make the "moon time" more pleasant. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Before my baby I had terrible cramps for the first two days of my period. I found that taking a laxative a few days before my period as well as taking a small cube of the aloe plant daily. It really helped with my cramps.

Sterry, you are right, when you get cramps it's good to get up and start moving around. I like to do step areobics with the video tape. The cramps do go away from exercise alone without drugs.

Sadly Ive tried this before and it doesnt work for me....the ONLY thing that works for me is 800mg Ibuprofen, I have no side effects from it. I have terrible cramps (they have put me in the hospital numerous times). Glad it works for someone though!

Other than that I don't touch soda.I hate to disagree, but I also have a diet high in omega, gamma and flax oils, and I exercise religiously and I STILL have horrible cramps.
