I need help in getting a waist. I am pretty small already 122lbs and 5'7. I am short waisted as it is but I am trying to find a way to somehow "create" a waist. So far my regimen was to build my upperbody (chest/arms/shoulders) and lower body (hips, thighs, butt)...so if these two areas get bigger (by bigger, I don't mean diesel..but more toned) then my waist area will appear smaller (in comparison).

But any short waisted people here? I hate being short waisted.

That is true. That is what they say to do along with wearing shoulder pads.

I am short waisted too. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I read inan old allure that if you stay away from carbs and do the routine that you are doing that your waist will shrink more than the rest of your body giving you more of an hourglass figure. The author did the routine herself and lost more off of her waist than anywhere else. I'll look for the issue and get back to you.

What does short waisted mean? I thought it meant that your abdominal area was smaller than the rest of your body; if that is true, I have never heard of making it appear longer.

I think I have a short waist and just want it to be flatter.

short-waisted refers to the space just under your breast down to your pubic bone. Some people have more length there than others. I am short-waisted too, and have been going to a personal trainer since July. I have lost a total of 25-35 inches all over. BUT not as much as I wanted to lose in the waist. For me all the other areas are toning faster. But I'm gonna keep at it. 60 minutes a day, 5-6x per week.
If you've got a lot of body fat......CARDIO<CARDIO<CARDIO!!! Got to work the fat thats around those muscles off before you can see them. 30-45 minutes 3 or more times per week will get you on the road to a great set of abs; then just add a nice ab routine for toning.

I am doing yoga and pilates and that is working for me.

Hm. I went from a 36 inch waist to a 28 1/2-29 inch waist in a little more than 4 months. Besides walking, there is a specific exercise on tae bo that can help with that. I don't know the actual name for it but he's standing up and lifting his leg to give a somewhat "crunch" effect. The kicks that he does on the tape also can give you waist definition.

I DO NOT RECCOMEND DOING TAE BO EVERYDAY. NOR DO I RECCOMEND DOING THOSE EXERCISES @ THE SAME PACE AS BILLY DOES THEM. AND I DON'T RECCOMEND DOING THE WHOLE TAPE. I may do 30 minutes of a tape and thats it. I don't believe in being worn out after exercise.

The tae bo move you are talking about, is that like when you want to knee a guy in the crotch, except you knee higher so you waist crunches to the side? If so, then I know what you are talking about.

How many of that can I do to see effects...and must I be doing them fast?

I had my body fat tested a month ago and it was 16% so I rest easy on that note. I am not sure what else to do but I still do my cardio and try to reduce my carbs. I also do weights. I think it's hard work and I hope to get some more info to help me synch my waist. Right now I am 34-26-36. Thank goodness I have a bit of hips otherwise I would be STRAIGHT. My bust and hip size are fine...but my waist need to be taken in (without resorting to lipo).
I think it's possible but I am trying to avoid losing weight when I do too much cardio.

I have always been 28-29; I want to be 24. My power yoga tape and Winsor tape are widdling me down. In those ads, where they show how your body changes shape, I actually can see the stomach bulge becoming more centered.

As for that crunch move, I have a 20 mintue routine I got out of a fitness magazine and that move is included.

I couldn't find the article Peachi. Bett1e exactly what tapes are you doing?

2003-11-18, 03:01 PM
The yoga tape is Power Yoga by Rainbeau Mars but you need to build strength before this tape. I developed strength from Fat Burning Yoga by crunch.

For Pilates, I do Winsor and I attach velcro weights to my legs (3lbs). I got the weights at TJMaxx but Wal-mart sells them.

I just found a very cheap gym with Yoga and Pilates classes so hopefully I will get even better results when I start going to the gym.

I agree that Taebo helps with your waistline. I have been doing the Taebo, Get Ripped Floor exercise series 3x a week and have seen excellent results in about 3-4 weeks. I also alternate with Winsor Pilates.

i also heard that if you had a somewhat broad ribcage its hard to slim your waist down. i guess thats why some people surgically remove some of their ribs to achieve this.

Ayeshia,

I posted this question about a year ago and people didn't seem to agree. I personally know I will never have a tiny waist because my rib cage is very pronounced.

I think I might have that rib cage problem too. I am not sure if it's pronounced or maybe it's just in my head.

I am starting a "windle down my waist" challenge with my elder sister starting in Dec. since we have the same goal.
Right now my waist is 26 and I want it down to a 24inches. 26 might sound small but with my figure it's odd and wide.

I will start doing the knee/crunch technique tonight. I will do about 50 on each side.

I am short waisted. I am only five feet. I have two daughters and gained 60 lbs with each. I started out as weighing a 102 pounds. Size 3-5

Now after each birth and a husband I weight 120 in winter size 5-6. And 115 during summer.
Not that much of a difference in size but weight.
It is all muscle. Lean body mass.
I am quick to build muscle in my lower body. Therefore I stick with low weight high reps.
As far as my waist is concern it is a 27-271/2. I do have some strecthed skin on my lower abs. Not much I can do about this. The key is a clean diet to lean out the body fat.
You can't do much about being short waisted. Im sure it is inherited. Just work on eating clean. Staying away form simple carbs like sugar, friut drinks, soda, doughnuts, cookies, candies cakes. Work on lengthening the body with Pilates and high cardio.
I am a Fitness Trainer and do anywhere from 90 mins a day of cardio consisting of interval, circuit training. I do strength training as well. Drink plenty of water to help flush out bodies fat.
Another great excercise is sitting on the floor with legs spread apart and twisting torso from side to side.
Try eating high protein and dark leafy vegetables.
I supplement with CLA, Omega 3, 6, 9.

im short waisted, and by that im referring to the term where you have little space between your hips and waist, or if your waist is low. i have about two inches in between my waist and hips. so basically, the curvature of my hips is hard to notice even though they are pretty curvy. my proportions are practically hourglass- 34-26-37 but i look like i have a boxy, boyish body because my waist isnt defined and its so low. i hate it too, i feel like i have a long torso, which no one agrees with, but anyhow. . . to look more proportional, i have found a few fashion choices that bring out my figure. try wearing tighter shirts that dont stop at the waist, but maybe end at the middle of your hips. this will work wonders. low waist jeans usually just start around our waist for we short waisted people, but it very low cut jeans and underwear help reveal curves more than regular cut jeans. boxy shirts will only make you look boxier. its all about creating an illusion of space. a big wide belt slung around the top of your hips will bring out the curves, drawing the eye lower and the waist higher.
and as far as losing weight goes, spot reducing doesn't work. low carbs will reduce the waist, yes, but the whole body as well. personally, im trying to gain muscle in my lower body, but knowing how to dress for yor body type has been very valuable to me.
also- im short too, 5'2'' and i refuse to wear scoop neck shirts. anything with a v-neck looks great on short people.
good luck!

I'm short waisted too, but I'm skinny/toned. It's just that my torso isn't that long but I have long legs so I don't look "balanced". Is that your problem or is it more of a weight issue? If you just want to make your torso taller try wearing low-rise jeans (when I do they sit low on my hips and my upper body appears longer) otherwise I recommend the diet & exercise tips already posted.

My weight is fine overall...but I know my waist can be better. If I had a taunt/hard waist area then I would know that that was my waist at it's best. But my waist is soft, so it leads me to believe that I can still do some work on it. I am not trying to lose like 2inches...just .5-1 inch all around.

I will implement by new cardio regimen this week and see what develops
