The Truth About Detox Diets

How they actually slow down your metabolism.

Stacy Baker

Q:
A friend of mine lost a lot of weight by doing a detox diet. Are they healthy for you?
A:
There are certainly better ways for you to drop a few pounds. Detoxification, or cleansing, diets aim to rid your body of disease-causing "toxins" by limiting the types and amounts of food you can eat. Some plans permit nothing except certain fruits and vegetables (which are often spun into juices), while the popular Master Cleanse fast restricts you to a cayenne pepper-laced elixir for 10 days.

Since the daily calorie count for many detox plans tops out at 700, you will slim down if you follow them, says David Grotto, R.D., founder of Nutrition Housecall, a personal- consulting company in Elmhurst, Illinois. But the weight you'll lose will consist of water and lean muscle tissue rather than body fat. And don't expect to be thinner for long: Because these diets put your body into starvation mode, it hangs on to every calorie to conserve energy. The loss of lean muscle mass dampens your calorie-burning furnace as well. So once you revert to your old eating habits, says Grotto, your metabolism will have slowed down, making you even more likely to regain the weight. Vitamin deficiencies are also possible, especially with the plans that limit fruits and veggies.

What's more, the whole concept of a detox diet is misleading. "Your liver and other organs naturally remove so-called waste from your body," says Grotto. "Eating whole grains, produce, healthy fats, lowfat dairy, and lean protein keeps these organs and your body's elimination process in top condition. If you cut your calorie intake to 1,500 daily, you'll lose weight, too."

Good article, and I agree that you can lose weight on 1500 calories, and without working out. Of course, the weight loss will be faster if you work out.

I agree also...except I think that working out is essential for the body, whether you want to lose weight or not:grin:

I agree, working out in some form is important. I made my statement because people are always going on 700 calorie diets and don't lose anymore than they would have on 1500 calories.

700 calorie diets are a :nono::nono::nono:

I try not to be judgemental or self righteous because I can relate to those people...couldn't nobody tell me nuthin when I was eating my 500 calories a day :(

I personally don't see anything wrong with lowcalorie diets. As long as they are good calories. Most vegans eat less than 1000 calories per day, but they are dense nutrient filled calories and very good for you. There have been studies to prove that the less you eat the longer you live. I am in no way advocating anyone starving themselves, but in other parts of the world, most people eat very low calorie diets because they cannot afford to eat pizza and mcdonalds and junk food like this society. That is why I love the raw food / vegan lifestyle...you don't have to ever count another calorie and your body morphs into what it naturally should look like instead of what the media tells us to look like on 1500 calorie a day diets.

Hey Trimbride... is that live miso soup salty or sweet... what makes it red looking?

yes, I saw a segment on TV about folks living a low cal lifestyle...but for them that was 1500 calories for women...I can't remember what it was for men...that is about what I eat in a day so this does not seem extreme to me...

I am talking about food abuse by limiting calories in an unhealthy way that negatively affects your metabolism. I know people are different...for me going too low on calories is not healthy for my body.

My miso soup is red from the tomatoes and miso paste...it was savory and salty, it also was a bit spicy, like a mixture of vegetable soup and Japanese Miso soup:lick:
