I am wondering because I use Loreal's advacd age fighting serum. I probably should've been using it when I was 16 or 17 but I didn't know then and thought the age to start was 25. That is what everyone was saying but I just started using them this year.

I was thinking about buying Victoria Principal's Reclaim next year but in the mean time, anyone know of any good products to stop the aging process?:ohwell:

I saw that infomercial about Victoria Principal's product. I watched an infomercial this morning, and Cindy Crawford has a line out too. To me, it looks more promising than the Reclaim line and it's a lot cheaper. I don't know much about anti-aging products, but the Reclaim line claims to have the anti-aging complex known as argirilene (sp?) and says that you can't find this complex anywhere else on the market. Yet, I was browsing a site yesterday that sells this stuff (argirilene) directly to consumers like us!! You can buy this stuff and make your own anti-aging formula (if you're into experimenting like that). So, do a little more research on this stuff. You may be wasting your money on the Reclaim line.

I've been a skin care junkie most of my life....breakouts and stuff have been my concern but I would say stick to the basics...... take a look at your mom's skin. Chances are you have nothing to worry about....but with all the products out there you'll go :spinning: bananas...

I think moisturizer is key and some rejuvenating element and sunscreen.....very important....use the screen

I have the Loreal Skin genesis...I use this under moisture it makes my skin feel nice but I don't see what its doing....I feel the Maxi Peel is doing alot for me....but that's another topic:rolleyes:

Personally as black women, we don't need to buy into all of that anti aging stuff since we definitely have an advantage in that area. I think the key is moisture, moisture and more moisture. Find yourself a good moisturizer and use it morning and night. Keeping the skin hydrated is the key to beautiful clear skin. Of course, if you wear makeup there are other products that you will use to properly clean the skin.

I think if you watch your diet and stay away from smoking and drinking, you should be fine.

I am beginning to believe this is true. I went to my family reunion this summer and most of the older women had beautiful skin and they don't use antiaging products. For the most part they just keep their skin clean and moisturized.

I agree with the fact that Black women have the best skin.....ok women of color, sorry no offense....

I saw this older lady yesterday and she had folds allllll over the place, she was prolly in her 70's but that made me think of my grand mother who was in her 90's (96 to be exact) when she passed and her skin NEVER , I mean Never had those types of wrinkles....my mom as well is in her late 60's and she doesn't have any type of wrinkles...( crows feet and such) only thing is sagging...so I hope I can keep it tight for a long time.

True that women of color has less to worry about re: aging; however, there ARE some things we can do and as a 43 year old who frequently gets carded and mistaken for 28 years old or so, I want to preserve the best of what I have.

My mother is in her 60s and has zero wrinkles and always had flawless skin and all she's ever done is wash and moisturize. I, on the other hand, had to battle acne for most of my life until several years ago and washing and moisturizing did NOTHING to clear my skin -- it was simply aweful! The dermatolgists were useless and I spent some $$$ going to them and buying expensive products that didn't work.

I learned a lot about skin care ingredients in the process of trying to clear my skin. I wasn't looking for anti-aging but wanted to normalize my skin. My skin has been flawless for years now and I know it's because of some good, innovative ingredients out there that was NOT available when I was younger.

Even the best, most flawless skin can use some help. For example, sunscreen, IMHO, is the single most important anti-aging product. Even my mother's moisturizer has that . . .

Well the most important anti aging agent is sunscreen.

Besides that I use retinol products every other night alternating with peptides. Retinol and peptides help your skin regnerate and stimulate new collagen production. They also help even skin tone.

African american skin doesn't wrinkle that much but we sag. That sagging is partly due to gravity but also from damaged collagen. Using sunscreen every day helps prevent collagen damage and the retinol and peptide products help heal damaged skin.

Products that I like include Neutrogena visbly even night concentrate, anti oxidant daily moisturizer and night cream, Olay regerist serm and night cream, olay total effects eye cream.

Yep, Yep to everything in bold! Retinol and peptites are some good stuff out there that was not readily available even 15 years ago, but can be purchase very reasonably online. Also, low pH, mild hydroxy acids are excellent ingredients for controlling breakouts and cellular turnover as skin ages. :yep:

Ok, the reason I am looking into these treatments is because I am looking at my mom age right before my eyes. And all that stuff about "Black don't crack" doesn't ring true for everyone. My mom has thin skin and it is very sensitive. She was not using any sunscreen products and the sun has very badly age her skin, like a white person except my mom is black. I think my skin is thicker than hers but still, I'm not taking any chances.

This summer she got a sun burn and it is like it effected her forhead the worst and it looks kind of leathery.

She's not a heavy drinker or smoker.

Can you share what you have found out? My blackness hasnt guarenteed me anything as I have wrinkles starting on my forehead (that are genetic- my mom has them too). And spending a few months in intense heat sans sunscreen has made my hands rough.

Anyway for me I find peels work the best and Im getting a series of peels on my face as soon as I can afford it and then Im gonna looking into a full body TCA peel.

Yup that sagging is where you see the effects of the sun and aging etc in women of color.

Gym, can you tell me how you use these products?

I am guessing that when you wake up you wash your face and then put the Neutrogena Anti-Oxidant daily moisturizer. Do you put the Olay Regeneris Serum on after adn then the Olay total effects eye cream? And at night you alternate between the Neutrogena Visibley Even Night Concentrate and the Olay Night cream? Am I half-way right?

And do you put the eye cream on before you put the whole facial moisturizer?

Thanks

Neroli, have you seen any visible changes in your skin since using the new creams/moisturizers?

Ahh, please don't say that! My mom has wrinkles there too and it is the worst than any other part of her face. I hope it was because of her getting bad sun burns.:look:

Hey, Bajangirl have you heard about this new thermage treatment they have? It isn't a face lift but it was featured on Oprah and it counteracts the sagging effect of aging. I wonder what age people start sagging?

How's the oily factor? I know I should be using a better moisturizer but I hate that greasy feeling. I use aloe vera gel. Twice, I've been tempted to purchase Olay Regenerist serum or moisturizer.

Here is a link http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145013 to a thread I started a while back that gives my entire skin care regimen and recommended products. Although my routine is primarily for controlling oily, acne prone skin, there is a strong anti-aging component in the same ingredients that helps with controlling acne. For example:

-retinol is great for fighting acne AND controlling wrinkles. Also collagen builder. I use every night.
-hydroxy acids fight acne (if pH is low enough) AND helps provide rapid skin turnover -- skin loses ability to turnover as we age and that's another reason for sag and mild hydroxy acids really help with that. I use every day.
-sunscreen. I - USE - RELIGIOUSLY - EVERY - DAY. PERIOD.
-copper peptides, vitamin C - I rotate these in an periodically just to mix things up. These NOT necessary for acne control, but good for anti-aging.
-peels (lactic acid, mandelic acid) - I don't do often or part of normal routine anymore, but I will treat my face every now an then, especially if skin been thru rough spell, like lots of time in pool or sea, I always give myself a good peel (I LOVE lactic acid) when I get back from vacation . . .

Here are some good websites that helped me in my research:

www.dermadoctor.com - great articles, never purchased any products here cuz same stuff much cheaper else where, but the articles are DA BOMB
www.smartskincare.com - excellent site
www.skinbio.com - excellent products. I use copper serum, started out with the regular and now use super whenever I rotate it back in
www.acneorg.com - plain good info for acne sufferers. One thing I learned here was about ACV toner and aspirin masks. ACV is just another alpha hydroxy which is why it works and aspirin is a beta hydroxy, which is why it works on acne, if they're used properly. If ever I can't afford to buy the stuff I now use, I will resort to these again. . . .
www.cosmeticcop.com - great articles. Never used her stuff, but good, solid info.

@ chicacanella: I'v always have looked much younger than I am (yes, oily acne skin will make ya look younger, that's about the only good thing about that!) my acne started clearing up within 3 days of using low pH, mild hydroxy acids along with a sunscreen years ago. I had spent my whole life battling acne and this stuff worked, literally, overnight. I incorporated retinol a bit later and THAT just took my skin to the next level where its even tone, shrunk my pores down to nothing and skin is smooth as glass and wrinkle free. I STILL have oily skin, but is is flawless . . .

@HWAY: I use aloe vera gel to moisturize too. In summer, I don't even need, I just use my sunscreen. But during cold months, I find a layer of aloe vera before sunscreen and at night helps a lot. I think once oily, always oily. I don't worry about it no more cuz skin is gorgeours and blotting with tissue few times a day is worth it. You'll look young forever . . .

I second the vitamin C and copper peptides. I read a looooong time ago on hallewood.com (halle berry's site) that she uses vitamin c to keep her skin youthful. I like to use the vitamin c serum in conjunction with the hyaluronic acid one day and then I use the copper peptides the next day. Also, lots and lots of internal hydration and at least 8 hours of sleep a day.
