My friend's grandmother is taking care of his grandfather, her husband, and its beginning to take a tole on her. He asked if I could look into some type of home care for elderly people. I don't know where to start, though. Anyone familiar with this type of program? How much did it cost?
Thanks :)

Hello IK,

I would say the best thing to do would be to visit facilities in your area. Take a look at how the residents are being care for and what types of activites they provided. This is what we did with my grandparents. The place that we wanted for them was very expensive. The minimum would have been $5000 per month for each of them. It was a really nice place and the staff was great but we could not afford it. They are at an okay place right now. The care is great which is what really matters IMO.

Just make sure that what ever place your friend choses, they keep the lines of communication open with the staff. Once the staff recognizes what your expections are, they will be more prone to treat your loves with a higher level of care.

Thanks Xavier. I think they were looking for someone to care for his grandfather in their home.

Hi, I just went through this with my mother and grandmother. I see you are Chicago. You need to start with the Department of Ageing. Call 311 and they will put you in touch with them. The Dept. of Ageing has an abundunce of resources and I'm sure you will be able to find something suitable.

I hope this helps.

I agree. I take care of my Mom full time in my home she does not qualify for state assistance and she does not have enough money to self pay at a facility....depending on the illness or condition your friends grandmother may qualify for Hospice care.....My Mom qualified in April and although it is not full time around the clock care in my home the time and days they are here have been a God send, this is paid by Medicare.

HTH.
