Everytime I use lipgloss that comes in tubes like this (pic below), after a while it starts to smell like mildew and when I use it after that happens it breaks my lips out in really tiny bumbs that take about 5 days to go away.

I am thinking, maybe it is spit (sorry kinda gross) entering the lipgloss, causing bacteria to gather in there. Especially since I subconsciously lick my lips sometimes before applying the gloss. But it still happens even if I don't lick. After using a lipgloss for about 3 weeks, it starts to smell and if I keep using it I break out. Never fails, no matter the brand. It makes me so mad, because I waste lipgloss! The only lipgloss that did NOT do this to me was Victoria's Secret Gloss, and it has been discontinued.:(

I don't want to have to apply the lipgloss to my finger then apply to my lips, because my fingers come in contact with things throughout the day and I may really be exposing my self to germs and bacteria. What gives? Anyone else have this problem?

The only time this happens to me is when i'm allergic to an ingredient in the lipgloss. My lips are very sensitive to citric acid and will break out in tiny bumps, making my lips feel like they are on fire. So i have to inspect the ingredients before i buy.

I've never had this problem. Maybe you could try pots + lip brushes or using brushes with the tube.

On Tyra's show (yeah, I watched...once! ) they did a story about bacteria in makeup...after just a couple of weeks, apparently everything from foundation to lipgloss is teaming with bacteria.

Wipe the top of the gloss with alcohol before you use it, that may help. But if it smells bad, definately throw it away, that's a sure sign it's gotten old or contaminated.

Maybe I am allergic to something in the lipgloss.

Divi, buying a brush is a very good idea.

MizA, I def know it is bacteria. I will def wipe it.
