“Now I'm glad—not that you were upset, but that you were jarred into turning things around. You let the distress bring you to God, not drive you from him. The result was all gain, no loss. Distress that drives us to God does that. It turns us around. It gets us back in the way of salvation. We never regret that kind of pain. But those who let distress drive them away from God are full of regrets, end up on a deathbed of regrets (2 Corinthians 7:9-10 MSG).”

We don’t have to live a life controlled by regrets. In a sense, regrets are a helpful emotion to prevent us from repeating the same mistakes in the future. However, we are not to stay wallowing, lamenting and replaying our mistakes over and over again for days, months or years. This type of behavior will produce guilt and shame. At some point, we have to keep it moving and keep going: “I can’t die here. I can’t stop here. This is not my permanent station in life. Let’s go!” Once we make this decision, then the healing process can begin and we can get back on track to doing great things.

The good thing about regrets if we don’t waste the experience is that it teaches us to have more love and compassion towards others. We have a greater capacity to accept others unconditionally. We realize that we are not our mistakes nor are others. Our mistakes never make us less of a person—we are still whom God says we are, God still loves us and we are still His handiwork created for good works (Ephesians 2:10).

Above all, our Heavenly Father has forgiven us for every sin—past, present and future. In His eyes, we are perfect and righteous (have right-standing with God) even if in the natural, we don’t dot every “I” and cross every “T.” This whole idea is liberating and brings freedom because we don’t have to work to maintain our Christianity. However, we don’t want to live in state of unrepentant sin. Repentance means to change your mind about something and go in a different direction. It doesn’t mean beating yourself up forever over a wrong committed. Simply, change your thought and direction about a thing. Nevertheless, God’s forgiveness of our sins cannot prevent us from facing the consequences of our sins. UNTIL NEXT TIME, GOD LOVES YOU AND HE HAS YOUR VERY BEST INTERESTS AT HEART. I LOVE YOU TOO VERY MUCH.
