This morning I picked up a morning paper. On the cover of the newspaper, there stood a coupon to join a big New York City gym franchise with the advertisement: "Think flu season's scary? Bathing suit season is 129 days away." This lit a fire under me to get it together because vacation season will be soon underway. The cold temperatures will soon turn into hot temperaturs which means that you cannot hide under bulky winter clothes. From time to time, it is so easy to fall back in old eating habits that don't serve our waistline. Thus, this week, I am officially fall back into the lane of healthy eating habits and getting a real workout regime together to not be bundled up on vacation this summer. For me and all my readers, that need to get it together on the healthy eating habits, here are some suggestions (not an all-inclusive list):

  • Reserve three times a week for home-cooked meals. When we eat home-cooked meals, we can regulate the amount of calories we consume. It is estimated that we consume 50% less calories from eating our home-cooked meals than dining out.
  • Decrease your chances of overeating during the day by starting with breakfast. For those of us in a rush every morning, there are plenty of quick, healthy options that we can grab on our way out of the door without consuming a ton of calories. It doesn't have to be complicated. You can opt for a yogurt with a trail mix to give you a satiated feeling, fruits with almonds, instant oatmeal, low-fat shake (e.g., breakfast powder & low-dairy milk),energy bar, or any other healthy mixture according to you diet plan.
  • Eat more foods with higher "water contentfruits, vegetables, water-based soups and stews, and cooked whole grainsare low in calories but satiating. Most also contain lots of fiber (an apple has three grams; one cup of cooked barley has six), which fills you up."1
  • Watch your portions. You don't have to eliminate everything from your diet. Swap out rice and other carbs for more veggies on your plate. Instead of taking the whole slice of cake, take a 1/4 of the slice or 1/2 of the slice. This will eliminate your feelings of being be deprived of the "forbidden foods" and prevent you from having a major setback.
  • You may not be able to bring lunch everyday, but you can pack healthy snacks to help curb your hunger cravings without going for fattening snacks in the vending machine and to cause you not to yield to the temptation to eat everything in sight.
  • Track your calories. Most people consume more calories than necessary for their bodies to function well. It's hard to see what you are doing wrong if you don't know that you are eating 2,500 calories per day when you should really be operating on a 1,500 calories per day eating plan for your height and body frame.
  • Increase your physical activity--exercise regularly.
  • Try becoming a vegetarian at least once a week. A few years ago, I remember a few fitness and health magazines promoting the idea of "Meatless Mondays." It is claimed that eating less meat can "reverse some of the common illnesses" within our country.2 We will not die if we go without meat for one day.
We don't have to be over-the-top to develop healthy eating habits. We can change our eating habits by making small adjustments in our everyday approach towards consumption of foods. These kind of changes will help you to build momentum to lose weight. To lose weight, we simply have to burn more calories than we take in. While this is a simply truth, it takes consistent, disciplined efforts on behalf of a willing party. UNTIL NEXT TIME, GOD LOVES YOU TREMENDOUSLY AND I LOVE YOU TOO. GOD HAS YOUR BEST INTERESTS AT HEART. EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE: "The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him(Psalm 103:13 NLT)."
