Just Be Yourself, Today And The Day After
“Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.” -- Judy Garland, Actress
From time to time, we have seen the words to: “Just Be Yourself.” While it is a generic phrase, it is good advice. It is great to admire someone and emulate the things we like about them, but we should always choose to be ourselves. God created us with unique talents and abilities: “Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. (Psalm 139:14 NLT).” Thus, we need to find our own rhythm in life and dance to that beat. Our passions, knowledge, and skills matter to the world.
“Just be yourself” by starting with this condensed list of elementary principles:
1. Decide on what you would like in life. What things matter to you today? This may require some work if you have spent your time letting others’ opinions and voices control you. Our priorities should supersede the superficial stuff such as just being cute and stylish unless we are in the public eye or the fashion industry. Those things are not going to matter to you at 70. What things of substance would you like to leave behind?
2. Have self-confidence and know your worth. Our self-confidence should be wrapped up in what God says about us and the fact that an expensive price was paid to redeem us. We are not worthless, but valuable. With God’s help, we have the ability to accomplish any goal that we set our minds and hearts to do (Philippians 4:13). Get rid of any limitations that you have placed on yourself. Thus, we should expect a positive outcome when we start on a new venture in any arena of life and not give up easily if we experience some turbulence. In the end, we know that we will win.
3. Be accountable for your life. In adulthood, we have control over certain aspects of our lives—our thoughts, words, and actions. We must make the choice to move forward in life and take responsibility for our lives. We cannot continue to blame our caretakers for our poor choices in life. We have take responsibility. As adults, we are given the great opportunity to rewrite our life’s scripts. Our life’s scripts can go from very bad to very good. This may require a lot of work on our end and not be easy—searching for the right materials, giving up self-sabotaging habits, and connecting with the right people to make positive
changes—however, it is not a Mission Impossible.
Nonetheless, there are limits you must set with yourself. Being ourselves never amounts to: (1) disobeying rules and regulations; (2) lacking manners; (3) playing small; (4) intentionally encroaching on others’ personal liberties; (5) telling everyone all your business; or (6) not attempting to make a good impression in the appropriate settings (e.g., job interview). However, never pretend to be something you are not. Eventually, the real you will come out… UNTIL NEXT TIME, GOD HAS YOUR VERY BEST INTERESTS AT HEART. HE LOVES YOU VERY MUCH AND I LOVE YOU TOO.
